Did you know...?
...if you have a library card and a pin number, you can borrow books and audio books for free from Haringey Libraries.

You can also access Oxford Reference online with your library card

I've tried to borrow an e-book from Haringey Library but it required special software to be downloaded which wouldn't work, and even if it had I wouldn't have been able to listen to it on my phone which is the only way I would have wanted to hear it. And I am pretty adept with new technology (colleagues are always coming to me for help with computer issues ... which I can usually solve for them). I hope Haringey Libraries have got a new provider, or the new provider has built a new platform, because I find it difficult to imagine how someone who was less confident with technology would be able to get the wretched software to work. I understand they have to cater to DRM concerns, but surely the ability of people to actually listen to the file is important as well!
That is annoying. I'm sure the library service would appreciate the feedback on it though as they are keen to get people to start using the service. If there are issues preventing people from accessing it, they do need to be told.
I had a little trouble with the audiobooks but I found the help desk of the software company were very responsive and helped me to solve the problem.
I've used the Overdrive app on an ipad for books (and apart from my library card running out which Wood Green library fixed for me over the phone) I've not had a problem with it. *touches wood*
OK, coming back to eat my words because it turns out that since my attempt some months ago, Haringey *have* upgraded to a new provider, and it *is* now possible to get books - audio and e - on my phone. Not without some difficulty, but I have just done it. The Overdrive app allows you to download both kinds, and will "return" them automatically before they are overdue.
