St Annes how to get them to agree to a referral?
I would very much appreciate any advice on this issue. Someone I know has waited a long time to finally be admitted to start a long term course on a mental health issue as a patient. They had been waiting a long time and felt a lack of confidence in the course and asked to be referred to another hospital which ran a course which was better organised, explained, resourced and intensive. St Ann's said 'wait till you start the course and then we'll review the situation'. This mantra was repeated whenever issues arose. This person has now been on the course for a while and is finding it of little use, and would like a referral to the other hospital who say all they need is a referral to begin an assessment almost immediately. The issue is of extreme importance. What process can be used to question this and push for a referral? Is the issue one of funding? The care team are evasive about exactly who can make a referral. Would really appreciate any information that can help.

There are a number of services out there that should be able to assist your friend.
May I suggest that they contact the Patient Advocacy and Liaison service at St Anns Hospital (PALS),they have an office at St Anns Hospital and may be able to address this issue on your friend's behalf. Their ph no is 020 8937 7826, email PALS@beh-met.nhs.uk.
MIND in Haringey also have an advocacy service,the phone number is 020 8340 2474,email dianearthur@mih.org.uk.
If no joy with the above,an email to the Chief executive of the Mental health Trust may be required or a phone call to the dept within NHS England that deals with mental health issues/advice/info might be useful. NHS England 020 7972 1155.

You probably need to go back to whoever referred the patient to St Annes. The GP?

It's not always widely publicised but people are entitled to a second opinion and one way of facilitating this could be through advocacy. I thought the D Mags response below was very helpful. Good luck.
