Inspired by a couple of posts on the Bun and Bar thread, I thought it would be nice to collect a list of local places where both vegetarians and meat eaters feel well catered for.
I'll start with:
El Bottelon, the tapas bar on on the High Road a few doors up from Tesco. A tapas place so it's easy to get a mix of veggie and meat dishes. Loads of vegetarian choices, and each one we have had is delicious. I especially rate the stuffed peppers. As a couple we go for 4 veggie plus one meat, and speaking as the meat eater I've never felt short changed.
San Marco. The longstanding Bruce Grove Italian. Always reliable, but used to be only for the nights when you could devote pretty much all evening to dinner. Since they started doing pizza it's practical for can't-face-cooking weekdays as well. The more I go to places that promise "wow" but deliver "meh", the more I appreciate that San Marco quietly and consistently gets neighborhood Italian right.
Jai Krishna, Turnpike Lane. Totally vegetarian, but so yummy I defy anyone to miss meat here!

Jashan is hands-down the best curry house in this part of town.
Great suggestion - I'd have assumed Polish was out, but it turns out the vegetarian has very fond memories of his old Polish flatmate's pierogi so we will definitely give them a try. This has nothing - nothing - to do with the large selection of vodka I also see they have
Oh that is good to know. We've had a few disappointing Turkish on the veggie side, so it's great to get a recommendation.
You've reminded me that we had a really good brunch in Rakkas as well. We've only been once so far, but the menemen and the sucuklu menemem both really hit that brunchy spot
Great post :D
I'm really keen to try out El Bolloton, and hearing the positive reviews of the veggie offering is very encouraging. Last time I mentioned it to my (also veggie) other half he muttered something about expecting it would be overly fishy, but the menu actually looks great.
I actually don't know if I'd agree about San Marco. It's a lovely place and I'm always happy to eat there, but it seems like a very old-style Italian (rather than a modern pizzeria) which is super authentic but not normally so great for veggies. Perhaps it's changed since our last visit.
I would add to this list:
- Jam in a Jar: mostly small plates but ample veggie options including really great arancini and there's a top veggie breakfast with halloumi, mushrooms, spinach etc.
- Rakkas: agree this is one of the best Turkish for veggies. We love the imam biyaldi and it doesn't seem quite as focussed on huge plates of meat as some of its neighbours
- Antepliler: first Turkish place we tried due to the ratio of meat to veggie dishes, and still always a good choice (many of the pides/Turkish pizzas are veggie in there)
- Devran: another Turkish restaurant with some interesting and tasty non-meat options. Definitely go for the deep fried courgette
It's in Stroud Green but Jai Krishna, the veggie indian there is an institution and there are over 4 pages of delicious veggie meals. I eat meat but love eating there...
Oh yes, love that place too - go fairly regularly. Unfortunately I've never been as impressed by the TL branch.
Yes totally agree - love love love the one in SG but not so taken with TL.
You know they aren't connected at all though - I asked once at the TL place and he was very adamant about this (even though the menus are so similar etc).
Oh really? That makes a lot more sense then. They probably get a fair bit of custom from people just wanting to try 'the other branch' as we did...or people who go to the wrong one
The food at Turnpike Lane Jai Krishna was better than it ever had been before, when we visited recently.
(not related - really? You're very right that the menus are extremely similar, and the ordering set-up is identical... that I'd have laid odds on it having been so at one point)
