I think direct phone marketing companies have a system  where they dial numbers automatically, then when someone picks up, they are instantly connected to of of the operators. Sometimes when you pick up there is no operator available to speak to.

Yes most of these weird numbers are not scams, just auto diallers. However you shouldn't reply to odd numbers like this, especially those that cut off when u pick up as they may be scams to get you to pay for a premium call. Usually a google check on the number will reveal origin or if its a scam

I didn't realise it might be marketing. I thought some overseas number that realised they'd dialled the wrong one. Thanks anyway.

Agree with Andrew. There are websites that log telesales-associated numbers, but this number doesn't appear on the ones I've looked at.  00-1 is the international code for the USA, at least from the UK, but it would have to be 00-1-414-567-8901 (say) to be a valid number. There are a few countries that use 001 (Cambodia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Guyana, Mongolia).

Sometimes, also, you get numbers which appear to be from London but are actually hiding a completely different source.

So I think it's most likely a made-up number.
