Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Whilst putting the bins out this afternoon at 2.30 - I spotted a guy today checking out my neighbours basement flat - he didn't knock on the door - just looked at the window and front door - then came back up the stairs. I looked at him and he came over to talk to me. Said he was a painter and decorator looking for work. When I asked him for his card - he said they were in his pick up. Yep - thats what I would do if I was looking for work - leave my cards in the van. He was blatently looking at the basement flats - checked our flat on purpose and read out the door number asking me if I wanted any painting and decorating - I said no. He said he'd pop round with a couple of cards in the next day or so for me to give to my neighbours - I mentioned that I'd be in. I asked him for his name - after it taking him a while to remember his name - said you can call me Bobby. He was an Irish guy, early twenties, red/brown short hair (longer and brushed forwards ontop), blue and white striped shirt and jeans and trainers. Clean shaven, thin and avg height. If you see someone like that - checking out some flats, stringing you a line about being a decorator - can you call the police? Would like to find him before someone gets broken into. I've been burgled twice in the last couple of years and it's just annoying. There's also nothing worth taking in our flat. Apparently there's a spate of break in's up Oakfield Road so perhaps they're spreading this way.

I think James is funny, harmless, light hearted and he's getting too much flack. We have some great characters on HOL who don't always agree. We can choose not to react to them though. Why don't we talk about something nice, like Restaurants. Went to Rashan last night. The food was absolutely amazing! Smiley face. Smiley face. Smiley face.

I'm sorry, James, but I don't for one minute believe that the people who posted think that there are deadly dangers on street corners, or that they are racist. Posts like these are often about seeking reassurance after an incident that is troubling to *them* - heaping ridicule or calling them racist  and ultimately driving people off the site is not acceptable, is unkind and doesn't achieve anything.

If posts of this kind trouble *you*, then begin a new thread explaining why you think people shouldn't post about certain things and manage your own discussion without hijacking threads, pointing the finger at individuals and judging them from the safety of a keyboard.

The 'Be aware of a black man carrying a gardening tool who wants to know the time' was ridiculous and I agree with James that there were obvious racist under tones. Racism should always be challenged. Actually one person on that thread was using foul and abusive language. Last time I looked those posts were still up. I can see that this post was different. Louise had been burgled before and the guy was indeed acting suspiciously and after being burgled twice recently she was obviously panicked. Jame's posts are always lighthearted. They make me laugh anyway.
Moderators don't take down posts unless complaints are made to them and which break the terms and conditions . Did you complain about the original post? We don't read all the threads - no time... Recently the tone of some discussions has lacked good judgement - this was one of them with regrettable results. We simply ask that people think before they write and refrain from piling in on individuals without consideration that there is a real person reading the replies, who understandably thinks life's too short to suffer ridicule for trying to flag up a worry to their neighbours and whom they probably think a lot less of now as a result.

James & Sharon, move over on the naughty step. We're deservedly on it. So let's just sit here on our lowly perch and admire the sunset over the moral high ground. Some day, after much repentance, we may get up there too.

Yep I have noticed this too Michael. It's the always the same gang. I usually ignore them but I can see how it would put people off from posting on here . Especially if they are new to it. They seem to think their put-downs are funny. It happened recently on here when someone highlighted an incident they found alarming. They were immediately subjected to sneers and abuse. I am sure they won't bother posting anything on here again. Which is a real shame because I use this website as a way of finding out things that might be happening in the area - good and bad. Louise - ignore the idiots on here! Thanks for letting us know about this man. It is useful to be made aware and I am grateful

I heartily agree with everything everyone has written above. Come back, Louise we're all needed on this watch.

I agree OAE

I see where liz and hugh are coming from. They want as many hits on the site as possible. So would i. Also if it wasn't for all their hard, unpaid work, this site wouldn't exist.

James! Shh. See you next Wednesday.

No James, as far as I'm concerned, I don't "want as many hits on the site as possible". I'd  like it to be a place for constructive exchange where people don't feel afraid to speak up for fear of being ridiculed. That's not too much to ask, is it? Do you feel okay on a human level that the poster who started this thread was so put off by people's comments the left the site?

Hugh, what about the nice people who leave this site for the opposite reasons ? surely they matter.
