Ladder Traffic Survey (Formerly "Counting Sheep............")
...........well, not sheep really, cars.
The Wood Green Car Free Day is coming up - Sunday 28th Sept, 7AM to 8PM. It's the closest we'll get to emulating traffic pattterns in Harringay in the event that WG High Street is made bus only.
It would seem to me to be an ideal opportunity for us to guage the effects on traffic in Harringay. To do that we'd need to select a few roads and measure traffic levels on the day that WG High Street is closed plus the same day on the week before or after.
We'd need agreement on the roads we should monitor, a group of volunteers (each of us could give a few hours each) and, ideally, some clicker counters.
Can anyone help wth any of that?

OK guys, the Car Free Day is coming uo this weekend. John and Eddie are doing Wightman between them, over on the Warham Road group Liz is seeing if anyone on Warham wants to monitor their road. I'll organise Hewitt. The Frobisher volunteer seems to have disppeared.
My time's a bit tight at the moment. So I'm going to have to leave you guys to organiuse things for your roads. At the moment only Wightman and Hewitt will definitely be covered.
John did the pre-care free day last weekend and established a surveying pattern - 15 minutes in the hour at the following times:
0700
1300
1700
1900
Traffic needs to be surveyed this coming Sunday and then again on the Sunday in the following week. Birdy Too has clicker counters which you can arrrange to collect from him. A real shame to miss this opportunity, but I'll leave it up to you to organise your roads. Let me know if you get soemthing going and I'm happy to collate the data.
To find other site members in your road, enter the road name only, e.g. Hewitt in the member search box on the right.

I just gave a couple of examples. I actually measured on the hour, every hour from 0700 to 1900 :-)

Difficult to say, without seeing the results from next Sunday :-)
Starting at 0700, no of cars per 15 mins on each hour was 50, 64,109,163, 219, 284, 351, 319, 302, 294, 349, 320, 257.
So bit of a peak at 1300 (people going to visit Grannies) then a dip, then another peak at 1700 (people coming back from Grannies).
Next Sunday we might expect an earlier peak, levelling off throughout the day as we reach saturation, and a higher average. But that would be anticipating the results of the survey :-)
Basically the more results the better. It's not that daunting. You do your 15 mins then go and hoover or pay bills for the rest of the hour. It's nice to have the radio on, but no TV

9-9.15am: 17
(Fortunately the person who decided to reverse backwards down Hewitt did so at 9.17am, thus saving me from wondering how on earth to account for him in my numbers!)

Quite a meditative activity. Unlike counting sheep I find I don't get distracted - IMHO there's no such thing as a good looking car.

It is quite a meditative activity, but here on Hewitt we're only in the minor leagues compared to the hundreds of cars you're counting on Wightman!
Who'd be in a car on a glorious autumn morning like this?! I'm bursting to get out there on my bike and feel the sun and the breeze on my face. -
