Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The council is proposing to install a new speed table – a long, raised speed bump – at the junction of Alroy and Endymion Road, as well as uncontrolled crossing points, which will make the road easier to cross on foot.

A pedestrian crossing further along Alroy Road is also being considered, and the council will carry out detailed work to look at the best location.

The plan for improvements follows calls from local people to improve safety at the junction. The council used a study by highway specialists Ringway Jacobs to come up with the proposals, which will be shared with nearby residents and Haringey Cycle Campaign in September.

Based on their feedback, detailed designs will be drawn up and the new measures are expected to be installed in January.

Plans to introduce a borough-wide 20mph limit in most residential roads will also further boost safety in the area, as many more of the surrounding streets will soon be covered by this limit. The limit is already in place in Alroy Road and Wightman Road.

Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Environment Councillor Stuart McNamara said: “We have acted on the concerns of local people and drawn up these plans based on a report from highway specialists. Together with the introduction of a 20mph limit in most of the borough, it will make this stretch of road even safer.

“Residents will get their say before the final set of measures are installed and we will continue to monitor safety in this road, as we do across the borough.”

The proposals for a pedestrian crossing will be looked at once this improvement is in place and the borough’s 20mph speed limit has come into force.

I hope people agree that this is really good news - and credit must go to residents and local campaigners (including people from different political parties) who have raised their concerns about the junction for a while. After May's elections it is something I have been pursuing with council officers and the cabinet member nearly every week.

I hope as many people as possible take part in the consulation when it comes out. Please email me if you want more information about the consultation or have further comments you want passed on about the junction.

Good on you for giving credit where credit is due, James. Party political point-scoring benefits none of us.

This is good news! A much-needed improvement! Thanks to all those who helped push this through!
