Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Who makes the best Gözleme in Green lanes? I'm trying to find them as good as in Istanbul, Mesale Restaurant near the Blue Mosque. Here they are thinner, crispier and have much tangier cheese.

  • Hala's are good but the cheese they use is a bit mild for my tastes, and I prefer them thinner.
  • Taxim Cafe's are tough and not recommended.
  • Niyazi Usta. They seem to sell a lot. Pretty good.
  • Shamata make them too but I've not tried them.

I was prompted by this to try Shamata - but they didn't have aubergine, and it wasn't on their list - is it a regular feature?  I did have a cheese one though which was delicious

I've also written in praise of Niyazi Usta but my kids who have been pretty much raised on gozleme consistently vote with their feet and it's Shamata every time for them. I just go where I'm told to :) Gozleme, like pizza, might be a question of taste and I think there's probably room for all the chefs. However, it is worth noting that Shamata don't have anyone sitting in the window for hours on end

One of the great strengths of the small businesses on Green Lanes and why I try to support them is the fact that you can chat to the chef, they are passionate about their food and will try to give you good service. New arrival Chang in Passion also came across in the same way. In the face of the mega-hangars of meat and salad where you don't know much about the staff's conditions of work, wages or background, I feel I have a bit of a duty to support the small businesses that are trying to carve out a place on the high street and whom I fear will be pushed out by the mega-restos. We've already seen Devran swallow up La Ruche although I admit I'm not sure why La Ruche has gone, just know we'll miss the pains au chocolat) and so I'm keen that we get behind the small passionate businesses.

Oh well Jonny, perhaps they deserved to go the way of bad businesses if you didn't like their cakes. They were another nice family business, friendly and welcoming to women customers and live in the area  but if they can't make a cake good riddance eh?

In the end, if we get nothing but large hangars selling meat and salad, I guess we'll know who we can blame. Certainly not ourselves. The market has spoken.

oh no i like the little ladies in the window! haha thats bad isnt it. didnt quite think about it beyond the authentico of it all. slave labour really! although from all the practice they seem very good at what they are doing!

You can find the best Gozleme in Shamata for sure :))) We had the spinach and cheese gozleme, it was delicious. Highly recommended....
