Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Having had the racket from the accordion player under the railway bridge wafting into our garden all day as usual, I went out to catch the bus and found another one sitting outside Barlcay's Bank. I've also seen an accordionist outside the Salisbury this week.

I know people have to live, and I'm not against busking (I've done it myself!) but I don't understand how they are allowed to stand and play there all day long. It's not pleasant to have to listen to it non-stop, and I'm sure if they were begging they'd be moved on pronto.

Were there jokes?

I might need to re-read the thread

Humorous remarks perhaps, but jokes is pushing it. Rather like the Irish traditional musician of note who was asked how the bodhrán should be played and answered 'with a knife'. And the old one 'A gentleman is someone who can play the accordion-but doesn't.....

Actually, the accordion well played is a fine instrument, but the guy on Green Lanes.....quail.......

I am now sick and tired of the Blue Danube waltz living as I do near Barclays bank. I hear it in my living room, I hear it everytime I walk past plus there are the other ones playing at the same time. It's become a constant presence- all day/evening. If it was an hour or two fair enough I really wouldnt mind but it's a regular thing. The older guy has more of repertoire, the girl at Barclays is very limited to one toon.

They must be making good money to stay there. Wonder if they give lessons? Oh, I only need to know how to play one song…

It's extremely intrusive and annoying as it goes on for hours on end - and as has been noted on this post, it is very likely an organised racket; the players probably take a pittance and the gangmastersl cream the rest. I'm surprised that Barclays Bank and the estate agents and other shops, as well as residents who suffer the interminable repetition of The Blue Danube and the like, have not raised this with Haringey Council or the Safer Neighbourhoods team. Sites for official buskers are licenced and these locations are not - so they should be moved on by the authorities - either Haringey Council or the Police Safer Neighbourhoods team. A traditional busker may do an ad hoc 30 minute stint on the street and be gone - which can be briefly uplifting. These musicians are just plonked down on Green Lanes (and a spot in Crouch End, too) and, one might assume, told to play for x hours which impacts negatively on the Green Lanes environment for residents and traders.

What a depressing - and indeed offensive - thing to read. Personally your comments make me even more determined to give the accordion players some money and encouragement EVERY time I hear them. The accordion players are only trying to make a living in an ever more hostile environment and actually enrich our lives.  Teresa

Rubbish.  Someone's that has decided to deprive residents of peace and quiet for monetary gain does not deserve respect or encouragement, but a kicking instead.

This goes for anything from big events or bars to buskers.

It just another form of pollution and anti-social behaviour. Not cool.

Cooler than giving someone a kicking though.

That was intended as a proverbial kicking, as in "get the hell of here".

They're welcome to make noise where they bother no-one.

If that can't be done, it's anti-social.

MarkB -

You really need to take a good long look at yourself.

What a truly disgusting thing to say.

As you may be aware, homeless and dispossesed people are regularly attacked on the streets, as well as also being socially marginalised.

You may not have intended this comment to be interpreted literally, but even by using the language and imagery of violence, you are participating in a discourse that validates such attacks.

For shame.

The mirror would crack.

MarkB, try living in the country side. Maybe quieter for you. Oh wait, there's those damned farmers out there with their noisy tractors trying to make a living too. It's just not fair is it. Try ear plugs.

This may be a crazy suggestion, but seeing as you've already called the police and they're unwilling to do anything, has anyone tried (god forbid!) talking to them directly?!

They're human beings, I'm pretty sure they don't want to be seen as a newsance, or have the police involved (even if they can't be bothered) I'm sure if you spoke to them, and explained that you don't mind them being there for an hour or so, but after that could they move further down, they would. You're not asking them to stop, you're just asking them to be reasonable.

I understand your frustration (I don't think I could bare it either), and I understand how how easily that turns to anger, but let's stop talking about these people as though they're 'not' people.

All of the accordion players I've heard busking around the area have been musically proficient and not loud or grating in any way, so I reckon that anybody who's against it must be a right old grump with nothing better to do than complain about something or other.

Given the ridiculous numbers of disgusting and offensive beggars on pavements with paper cups in front of them and requests for "Spare change",  I can't fault anybody who's actually applied themselves to learning an instrument (as anyone who's ever tried will know, it ain't at all easy) and is contributing something to the environment by way of a soothing alternative to the incessant traffic noise.
