Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

How much money does Haringey/Islington earn, net, per disturbed resident? Just wondered if the disturbance of the peace is worth it? Is my peace worth £5 or £5000 to go into our public services? Made up answers welcome as is the quoting of dodgy statistics or even anecdotal evidence(my personal favourite)

I was impressed with the litter picker-upers this time.  They have done a great job.

To get back to the bottom line - if Haringey Council charge £130K for a concert (last year's fee for the Stone Roses) that grosses £4.95M (based on 90K x £55), that is a mere 2.6% proportion of the gross income, which might be considered to be poor value for Haringey's Council Tax payers. It might be argued that a commercial business running an outdoor facility would charge a percentage in the region of 20%, which would be just under £1M - the kind of funds which Haringey Council should be able to put to very good use in the borough. Even a nominal 10% would be approx £500K, if Islington Council was also charging a similar amount to the promoters.

£130K seems like poor business, indeed. Maximising the potential income generating possibilities for the use of the park by commercial promoters should be standard practice, if such events are to take place (and when they do, it is much to the annoyance of many residents in the area, from what can be gleaned from this post). Maximising the fiscal benefit for the Council's constituency, the Haringey residents, should be a major priority in such exercises.

It would be interesting to know what fees were charged to the promoters for the Arctic Monkeys concerts.

All these points were raised when the libdems "called in" the decision and had a special scrutiny meeting - I had been arguing for some time that the council should be charging the promoters more and having less concerts.  As usual Haringey Labour knew best and the decision stood - it wasnt for the want of trying by local residents and libdem councillors.  Now we all have to live with the decision - I imagine as the summer goes on, when residents can't sit and enjoy their gardens, can't sleep, can't get their kids to sleep - they will get pretty fed up.  Unfortunately this is what you get when you have a majority group that runs roughshod over the residents and doesn't give a hoot about their opinions.

Hi Geoff

Here's the link to What Do They Know.com - ocm https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/

You can ask Haringey to set out the costs of the concert and the fee they charged to cover it.  You could ask for costs to all the services involved,  and how these were covered. The overall cost should include the net fee after costs. I can't see any reason why they shouldn't tell you since they were very open about the fee charged for the Stone Roses,  and when we discussed the concerts policy at the St. Ann's and Harringay Area Forum meeting several months ago now, the Parks Officer accepted that Haringey had underpriced the Stone Roses event. He explained then, that Finsbury Park was considered the best venue in London after Hyde Park for huge gigs so the fee should reflect that.

Hope to see your Freedom of Information Act questions posted.
