Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A few years back I helped to set up the Bowes and Bounds website. Now I'd like to nick one of their ideas.

The website has been used as a channel to set up an event that seems to have become a staple in the local calendar. Freelance Fridays are aimed at people who freelance, work from home or are involved with a local small business.

The event listing says:

Use this group to tell others about your work, share ideas, swap contacts, or just get out of the house and speak to other people.

A year or so back, Matt Gamble set up a local business network via HoL, which seemed to work well for the quite small group it attracted.

Just this week I was referring a bit of business to a Ladderite I met through that group. I've got some commercial photography work through it and apparently others from the group have also got some good slugs of work.

In spite of this and despite the efforts of Matt and Geoff to keep the group going it didn't ever quite take off. I'm wondering if the format was wrong.

The Freelance Friday concept is much simpler. It's just an informal networking opportunity (I think). Bowes Park is further than I want to go for a drop-in, but I'm attracted to the concept. It's both social and commercial.

Is anyone else interested? I'm not going to volunteer to organise it, but all it would take (I think) is a posting on HoL every now and again and some initial chats with a cafe owner.

Me too- I'm interested in informal but networking element as always having to look out for work.

I don't get to Blend often enough so it would be good to have further motivation to go. Plus a time when it's not mums and babies/toddlers -no offence to them at all and they need their space too out the house to socialise as well! Just that I dont function very well in a kindergarten setting. That  puts me off certain cafes at certain times.

It could be at different cafe each month to give other traders some extra business?

I think that is a great idea, plus you discover other lovely cafes.  I'm near Tottenham and we have Marmalade café which is really nice.

I'd be interested in this, though I'm afraid I can't contribute to organising at the moment.

Perhaps if someone dare venture a day/date and time and check with a cafe first that they might be descended upon? And then go from there…

I would be interested. For me it would be mainly something to get away from the computer and speak to some humans over lunch but of course you never know, in terms of networking... I wonder however wether raising expectations about networking might be counterproductive. Ultimately we are likely to be from such disparate fields... I would prefer to stress the socialising element. In fact, didn't we have a couple of home workers events a few years ago?

I agree with the need to avoid - to the extent possible (is it possible?) - cafes that have a lot of toddlers, particularly as I am at risk of bumping into my own, being looked after by someone else on Fridays!

Great idea!

I'd drop by when I could

I was in Jam in a Jar yesterday and happened to mention this to Quto. He'dbe happy to host us. So if folk are still up of this, how about 12:00 next Friday - the first Friday of the month? Then if it flies a bit, we could keep it monthly on that date, if it flies high, we could be fortnight nightly or weekly.

I think it would be nice if we could get say ten of us along to start with. I'll add an event and would ask that you RSVP.

Really sorry I can't make it, I have to be at a meeting in town that day.

thanks for arranging, perhaps next time.

Me either, I've found office-based employment again...:(

I'll be there. Glad it is at Jam In A Jar. Quto has kindly hosted my attempts at getting a backgammon session rolling once a month. It's a great venue.

Hi, what a great idea. Unfortunately cannot make this Friday but will make myself available for next event - will that on 1st Friday in May, same time and place? Rukhsana
