Where To Stop Off In Central France?
I am driving down to the French Alps over the summer, and I want to stop somewhere for a few days on the way down to break the journey. We hope to camp.
Does anyone have any recommendations we can have a think about as to where to stop that might be somewhat on the way, more than 3hours beyond Calais and keep the kids interested???
I know little of central France, so all recommendations welcome.

It's 3 hours from Calais to the south of Paris. I stop at a hotel BB after leaving on a Friday afternoon from London on the way to northern Spain. Eurocamp allow you to search for campsites by region.

Dijon. I was a student there. Plenty to keep the kids occupied with museums and parks and a lot for the parents too with the Burgundy wine and the Creme de Cassis, plus it's a really pretty town with all the facilities because it's the biggest place for miles - same kind of feel as Chester or maybe York. There is a Grey Poupon shop in the centre that has (or at least had when I was there!) mustard taps like beer taps - you can get them to fill up a jar for you from the barrel! It might be a bit east of your planned route, but it is a useful distance between Calais and the Alps.

Actually it is right on our route. Never thought of Dijon. We stopped in Beaune last time, a bit further south, and I loved the wine- the kids not so much, so some where with a bit more interest might be useful.
Ardeche sounds excellent, but might be a bit out of the way for this trip- if we aim to spend longer en-route this might be a cracking place to go though.

The Visit Dijon website lists all the museums and parks: http://www.visitdijon.com/en/. Lac Kir is a great place to go for a picnic - it is huge and has kids' playgrounds, jogging and cycling tracks and loads of space to run around. You can easily drive or get the bus there from central Dijon, or take quite a long walk (might be a bit much for the littlies).
I haven't looked at the website in great detail, but it used to be the case that you could get a card that would give you entry to multiple museums and places of interest from the Ducal Palace tourist office, so that might be worth checking out if you decide to go to Dijon.
