Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Backgammon evening

Years ago when I was living in Greece I got hooked on 'tavli' - otherwise known as backgammon. It's been years since I played and my board sits staring at me reproachfully in my living room. I am wondering if there are others in this community who would be interested in setting up a monthly backgammon evening? We might affiliate with the existing Backgammon in London network depending on how serious we want to get. I'm not driven by the desire to play for stakes, but simply to get to play and improve my skills. Perhaps a local bar or café would be interested in hosting the evening.

As a student I used to do backgammon all-nighters but I very rarely get to play now. In fact the last time was a couple of years ago, with some friendly old guys in a Greek Cypriot social club in Queens, NY. I would love to come along and play. I might also still have a board somewhere.

It looks like there are a few of us who are interested in getting the boards out. I'm wondering about Sunday 9th February as a possible time for a first meet, say from 6pm. What do you all think? I was also wondering about Jam In A Jar as a possible meeting place - I need to talk to the owner and just check he's up for that. I really like Jam In A Jar, it's friendly and there are good things to nibble. The only issue I can think of is that obviously it is a music venue and there will come a point when the music will take over. But we'd get a couple of hours of play in before that, or if we wanted a longer session we could meet a bit earlier. Open to all thoughts, ideas, suggestions.

Sunday 9th around that time is good for me. I've dug out my board, counted the pieces (all there), and am really looking forward to rolling the dice...

So far I think we're all players with rusty skills or beginners so it's going to be a very low pressure meet.

I've now been in to Jam In A Jar to float the idea of a first meet on Sunday 9th February and was given a warm welcome. A 5:30pm start works best for them after the Sunday lunch rush and before the evening gets really busy. Music starts at 8pm so we'll have a good couple of hours to play. Quto and Ciara are both interested in playing a bit as well potentially and if there is on-going interest we are looking at the possibility of running a monthly meet on a Wednesday evening when we could hang out for longer if we want and it could grow as a regular event.

I will post a reminder nearer the time. Meanwhile hope 9th Feb works for everyone who has expressed interest and look forward to meeting you in person then.
