Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Kebabs are great but wouldn't it be nice to have some more proper fish and chip shops in the area?

If you're looking for something round Turnpike Lane - try King Neptune's on Lordship Lane just near the corner of Westbury Ave. Used to be Mr. Chicken & Fish - which was... OK, but has since been re-opened (...apparently by the same family that used to own it 20+ years ago).

Firs time back there the other night - lovely piece fish with a nice light batter, fantastic chips and a proper mushy peas.

I always avoid foodie or cookery programmes on TV.  And I was about to switch radio stations when the scrolling DAB display said: "The Food Programme". But it was about "a renaissance in fish and chips" which caught my attention.  So I stayed listening. Anyone else hear it?

It's on BBC iPlayer

Excellent, thanks for this Alan!

From the iplayer link, food blogger Daniel Young suggests;

The Top 10 Fish and Chips in London

chip-fork-top-10

1)   Fish Central
2)   Toff’s (Muswell 'ill)
3)   The Fish House of Notting Hill
4)   Kerbisher & Malt
5)   Sea Shell of Lisson Grove
6)   Oliver’s Fish & Chips
7)   Poppies
8)   Masters Super Fish
9)   Fish House
10) Seafresh

My favourites are both in town and not on that list: North Sea Fish (near the Brunswick Centre) and the Fryer's Delight on High Holborn (very greasy but in a good way).  Both much better than Toff's imho. Gig's near Goodge St not bad too.  I am glad I don't have a really good chip shop near where I live as I would be in it all the time.

I'm a big fan or the North Sea, but I do only work around the corner. Ask for the mini cod and chips to take away at lunchtime. Cheap and not at all mini.

I wouldn't put Toff's up there. You get better fish at George's by the Salisbury.

Not local, but well worth trying is Golden Union, north end of Poland Street near jct with Oxford St.

only round the corner from my office, I often see people in our canteen with take-aways from there and I must resist the temptation at all costs!!!

But I like Poppies on Hanway street and also Sea Fish on Upper street, although I really am no authority on the subject!

Yes Poppies is pretty good too.

The one opposite the cop shop in Hornsey is good. Always cooked fresh and a nice fella who runs it. One of the oldest in London apparently.
I 'll second George's as a great local fish shop but a big thumbs up for Toffs as I was there last Friday and the fish and chips were great + I got to chat with Charlie George- Brucey bonus!
