Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Cyclist hit by a car tonight; I'd guess at about 6pm tonight. Near the pelican crossing where New River crosses Green Lanes, Northbound direction.

The traffic was delayed, police & ambulance attending, it did not look nice!

I cycle down that hill at least 3 times a week, there are 1 or 2 nasty potholes by that crossing. Of course this is my speculation but maybe the cyclist hit a pothole & then collided with a passing car.

I hope the rider is OK, if anyone has more info please post here.

If I'm right (above) then the council is at fault for the pothole (plus the street lighting is poor) &, if the car was overtaking the cyclist, the motorist would be at fault for passing too closely.

Furthermore: there was another ambulance positioned further North; under the railway bridge. (I did see a bicycle leaning against the wall but no-one lying on the road).

Motorists: please don't overtake cyclists when it is not safe (they may suddenly wobble if there is a pothole).

Cyclists: please overtake motorists on the right, it's safer than passing down the left by the curb. AND, move out into the centre of the lane to prevent motorists from overtaking you if it is not safe for them to do so (use your position to control the traffic behind you, the gutter is the most dangerous place to ride).

I disagree very strongly with this advice - certainly if applied to Green Lanes southbound - for the same reasons I stated earlier.

As another cyclist I'd agree with the advice that it's best to go down in primary and, if it's safe, pass on the right. If you're passing on the right you can control this as you can see ahead to note whether there's traffic coming and either pass or tuck in as is fit.

If you go down the left you end up in that strange cycle lane which either forces you onto the pavement or ejects you into the traffic.

Regardless of what cycle lanes may suggest it's fairly rare that passing on the left is the best option.

Should HGV's have a 20 MPH limit,
to avoid cycle fatalities in built up areas of London?

That many tonnes at 20mph is still going to kill. Most often they are doing less than 10mph turning left when they kill.

I think all London roads, with the exception of some duel carriageways, should have a 20mph limit. A good road bike can do 18 or 20mph on the flat & therefore keep up with the motorised traffic thus preventing dangerous overtaking.
HGVs' will always be a problem as long as they have blind spots. Of course there are inattentive drivers (eg. the one who killed twice) & these should have the privilege of driving removed from them.

The overwhelming majority of fatalities caused by HGVs occur at junctions, where speed isn't even a factor.

The tree officer from Hackney has now surveyed the horse chestnut tree and has agreed that it does need to be reduced in size to allow more light in this area. He hopes that this will take place before Xmas but if it requires a Traffic Order to close the road, then it will be in the New Year. He is also in contact with his colleagues in lighting,  so that they can assess the situation when the tree has been worked on.

There are several trees in Finsbury Park that he said also need to be reduced as they are blocking light from the lamp columns on Green Lanes - he has contacted Alex Fraser, the Haringey Tree Officer about this. Perhaps Alan can get us an update from Alex as to if (and when) this will be done.

I was also wondering about the need for - or possibility - of brighter lights on the crossing itself.

I think that would be a very good idea, but this would be a Hackney decision I think

In case someone else was about to report this, Adam phoned me earlier this evening to say he'd reported the street lights out in the Haringey part of Green Lanes next to Finsbury Park (only on the western side). I hope he doesn't mind me mentioning this.

Given the problems we've been having at this location with potholes and trees, this is an extra emergency we don't need. Adam asked me to report it as a councillor. Which I did - through Haringey's Out of Hours Service.  It will be interesting to compare the response with Hackney's Out of Hours team yesterday. The person I spoke to this evening was just as pleasant and helpful. Though they didn't know the specific road.

To me, incidents like the potholes/streetlights problem in Green Lanes show once again the value of having an "eyes-on-the-street" community initiative. It was disgraceful that Haringey let its Community Volunteers scheme wither away.  (Liz Ixer's blog explains what happened.)

I gather there is to be a new scheme. I hope it's successful.

as for overtaking on the left or right - both have their own dangers- as one police officer who stopped me this week adviced me! dont overtake or undertake vehicles- clearly not a cyclist- why would any cyclist double their journey stuck behind smelly exhaust polluting vehicles

so Ive been hit a few times over the years mostly by overtaking on the left by

car passengers jumping out of cars

cars suddenly turning left across me

pedatrains running across the road infront of me

worst - cars coming from the other direction turning infront of me- lethal

so overtaking on the right only been knocked off once by a taxi next to me doing a u turn- but very minor

 so def always better to overtake on the right, but always cycle assuming you havent been seen

 and do you know I have cycled down this part of green lanes 5 days a week for years and never noticed these pot holes or bad lighting- still hate the narrowed island built at the top green lanes at manor house going south-so scary- but thats hackney and i complained when it was first put in- made no difference- also terrible pot holes on the stretch to finsbury park- both sides= also hackney
