Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Cyclist hit by a car tonight; I'd guess at about 6pm tonight. Near the pelican crossing where New River crosses Green Lanes, Northbound direction.

The traffic was delayed, police & ambulance attending, it did not look nice!

I cycle down that hill at least 3 times a week, there are 1 or 2 nasty potholes by that crossing. Of course this is my speculation but maybe the cyclist hit a pothole & then collided with a passing car.

I hope the rider is OK, if anyone has more info please post here.

If I'm right (above) then the council is at fault for the pothole (plus the street lighting is poor) &, if the car was overtaking the cyclist, the motorist would be at fault for passing too closely.

Furthermore: there was another ambulance positioned further North; under the railway bridge. (I did see a bicycle leaning against the wall but no-one lying on the road).

Motorists: please don't overtake cyclists when it is not safe (they may suddenly wobble if there is a pothole).

Cyclists: please overtake motorists on the right, it's safer than passing down the left by the curb. AND, move out into the centre of the lane to prevent motorists from overtaking you if it is not safe for them to do so (use your position to control the traffic behind you, the gutter is the most dangerous place to ride).

Thanks, Tris.

This is it in its full glory. You could not see it on the report I made to Hackney, but really, how this was allowed to fester is beyond me. What does it cost to fill, and what will a civil suit cost to defend + compensation?

What I did not report, is what others have mentioned, this whole area is pretty shoddy (Hackney and Harringay side!), you can see some of the patches and wearing surface right behind the main one I was focusing on on the southbound carriageway.

I saw that Jan Kraus had reported this on 28 November to the Council's Twitter account. He tweeted me this morning to say he went past and the "pothole's been patched up!".

Is that the dangerous pothole at least temporarily made safe?  Or are there others nearby just as hazardous? Hopefully Hackney haven't forgotten the tree.

Though perhaps the most pressing need is for someone from Hackney and Haringey councils to go along together and take a look. But they'll need a Genchi Genbutsu frame of mind. Plus the authority and resources to make changes which may "stick" and make this a safer stretch of road.

In the medium term this could even save money. It may save someone's life.

I also saw police and ambulance on 27 November. Asked police officer what happened and she said cyclist injured after fall caused by pothole. Apparently no car involved, she said.
To Tris I would say be more careful in your assumptions. Why assume a cyclist went through a red light and start criticising the cycling community? Absolutely uncalled for!
Last night I also saw an ambulance at the same spot again but did not see cyclist so no idea what happened.
Good news this morning I noticed the pothole has been fixed!

.... the pothole has been fixed!

Fantastic.

Jan

Tris did not assume that a cyclist went through a red light; her comments, made in wholly justifiable response to speculation by the OP that a motorist might have been to blame, were completely called for and I would venture to suggest you should be more careful when reading posts!

ok so more police tonight

seems cyclist knocked off earlier today at manor house for jumping red light, same time as car was jumping red light(according to friendly pc at traffic lights)

so if you want to jump lights-dont do it unless its all clear

from my networking it seems that the police are going for the easy targets: cyclists!

What's your evidence for that ?

Seeing the police stopping cyclists at Manor House for 2 days (yes, anecdotal, sorry, cannot spell).

+ other connections on facebook with similar experiences.

On tuesday night I passed through on the bus just as they pulled up a motorbike for unnecessarily sitting in front of the advanced stop box...was good to see them reinforcing that. So.. I think they are just generally ensuring all road users are obeying the law rather than picking on anyone in particular.

So it's OK to attack the police on the basis of gossip and hearsay ?
