"Several hundred battery-powered bicycles will be on London’s streets next year in a pilot scheme that breaks new ground in the UK. The bikes will be introduced in some of the capital’s hilliest parts, where steep climbs put many off taking their bike or even walking.
Earmarked corridors will run through Muswell Hill, Crouch End and Alexandra Palace, with a base station at Finsbury Park Tube. Boris bike-style docking stations in these areas will double as electric charging points for the bicycles."

Hmm, given the Muswell Hill/Crouch End/Ally Pally declared territory, I claim notional copyright to "Too posh to push" in this regard.
But, as a (now time-served - excuse: duff wrists and shrinking calves) cyclist, I concede it's no fun even in good condition to flog up to the top of the Hampstead Ridge to reach Ally Pally or Muswell Hill.
Crouch End, though, is baby steps.
I read this yesterday and while it sounds like a good idea in theory, I wonder about the safety implications of it. Already a lot of cyclists are riding 'without due care and attention' so giving them a motor means they can do it faster. As my (partially sighted) husband says, you can't hear a bicycle coming at the best of times and this could only make matters worse.
Living in Woodstock Rd and on the cycle route to the station where all these bikes will be based I can envisage a big increase in the (cycle) traffic along this residential road and wonder how the mix of pedestrians, cars and bikes will work out in prsctice.
Meanwhile, the cycle lanes that were in the original plan for the removal of the Tottenham Gyratory have just disappeared. The newly two-way roads: the High Road and Monument Way - have no cycle lanes. Broad Lane's cycle path is being dug up. Utterly shameful. What happened? Calling Boris....
While you're there ringing Boris (is he back with his begging bowl from China?) can you ask him to stop pretending that the blue cycle lanes are safe and invest in lanes separate from vehicles; nothing else will do or should have money spent on it when it comes to cycle lanes. Painting a road edge a different colour means nothing to motorists because half the time they don't even see such 'cycle lanes'. Another cyclist using a blue lane in London has been taken out by a truck in the last week.
There is room on all the new roads for a proper separated cycle lane. The unusually wide pavements up the High Rd, open space on Monument Way, and Broad Lane going from three lanes to two, means there is plenty of space for at least a minimum width mini-road for bikes, is it 4 foot? WTF has happened? They were there in the original plan when we got 'consulted'.
They're not putting docking stations for these in central London, so hopefully they'll put up some stands for the standard bikes at Finsbury Park while they're at it. It would be good to have the option of cycling into the centre rather than bus, train or tubing it if the weather's nice.
