Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Having recently seen the ~BBC 'inside out' prog where the threat to property prices and mortgage applications has finally brought the issue to light, I wonder what people think we can do? I have noticed it in neighbours front gardens and also in Tottenham marshes. In my own garden I got rid of it by digging and burning but there seems to be no agency tasked with fighting it as it makes its advance without seemingly any concerted effort to stop it. In a few years it will be a far greater task.

I reported the Japanese knotweed to Thames water a few months back, as it was growing on the river bank side and came over to garden. They have been poisoning the bank since then and they will continue to do so for three years.

Round Up works within days, I don't know why people need to dig it up and burn it. When I had some in my garden I read loads of scare stories about it, but a couple of bottles of Round Up completely killed it.

also a healthy amount of salt poured onto the roots of the plant kills it. DO NOT UP ROOT IT OR DIG IT UP, just starts to grow else where

All good points. My worry is that no governmental body is tasked with its eradication. I am seeing it all over the ****ing place!!!!

Well I suppose the Environment Agency is responsible, at least for providing information, but I won't expect EA Knotweed hit squads any time soon: as with most countrywide environmental issues, the responsibility for action is devolved to local councils and individuals. Carry a camera to identify sightings then report them to public/corporate landowners (as Bulent did to Thames Water) - and a Roundup sprayer??

As for the legal questions about responsibilities, here's what one council has produced:  http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=19756 and here's a related article  http://www.theguardian.com/money/2012/sep/08/japanese-knotweed-hous...
