Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi All

Just looking for a bit of local knowledge.

Now my little one has reached the grand old age of 20 months (hence my long absence from HoL)   I am finding I have a teeny little bit more time to myself :) I am really keen to see if I get involved in helping out with a local Kids organisation. Particularly keen to help out disadvantaged children either helping organise events - Christmas parties etc. or baking - have been trying to find out if you can donate home cooked food to families who made need it? or working with kids and families in a practical way.

Also are there any local orgs that distribute clothing and blankets?

I work full time  so I can only support maybe a evening or so a week or a few weekends a month.

Mr P is also really interested in becoming a mentor for a local young person.

I can't really find much locally but I am sure there must be grass roots groups working in the area - not really that keen to support national organisations, I would prefer to find a small local group that needs help.

If anyone knows of anything please do get in touch

There is a children's charity baed in Tottenham Lane, Horrsey, not sure if they might be looking for volunteers?

Hi Tamara,

Welcome back!  I have a couple of suggestions.  On the blankets/coats front, there is a winter night shelter that operates from Holy Innocents Church on Tottenham Lane in Crouch End and they are often on the look out for that type of thing - the slightly wordy version of what they do is here: http://www.holy-innocents.org.uk/holy-innocents-winter-night-shelter/, but they also have a facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Winter-Night-Shelter-at-Holy-Innocen....  The pastoral assistants that look after the Night Shelter are Philip Kennedy and Eddie Carr.

In addition, the Trussell Trust runs Hariney Food Bank which operates from a few different locations locally.  They might be interested in volunteers and/or contributions.  Their website is here: http://haringey.foodbank.org.uk/  The congregation at St. Paul's on Wightman Road contributes to the Trussell Trust, as do a number of other churches in the area.

I hope this helps!

Bethany

Great stuff thanks guys - have already donated to Trussell - had a load of left over baby stuff I didn't need I might start putting together a couple of shopping bags to donate every month

Does anyone know of the local group of bakers think they were Tottenham based that were baking cakes for kids birthdays if the parent may not be able to afford to provide one, I thought that was a brilliant idea but due to baby couldn't get involved at the time.

The birthday cake people: http://www.haringeyindependent.co.uk/news/9681311.Free_birthday_cak...

And Action for Kids is a locally-based charity, which operates here & across the UK: http://www.actionforkids.org/

Oops, thought I mentioned the name of the charity in TottenhamLane, Action for Kids! That's what happens whn you post in a hurry!

Wow I have been looking for you! I am a local mum to 2-year-old Gaby and a Salsa Dance Instructor.

I run Salsa With Sureka which hosts monthly Charity Salsa parties for different Children's Charities every month.

Since launching just 5 months ago, we have raised over £550 for Children's charities including NSPCC, War Child, Save The Children, UNICEF and SOS Children's Villages.

Our last event raised £130 for War Child - www.justgiving.com/salsawithsurekasept

The problem is that all the advertising and marketing is weighing me down and I desperately need an extra pair of hands to keep the charity events monthly as I'm currently doing everything myself.

Therefore a few weekends a month would suit me down to the ground and I'd be happy to pay for your entry to the Charity Salsa parties in return if you would like to join us of course!

If this is of interest, maybe we could discuss over a playdate with our little ones?!

Best wishes,

Sureka x

Kith and Kids are a Tottenham based charity working with kids with disabilities. Their volunteering page is here

The Burghley Road Under 5's play space in Turnpike Lane is desparate for volunteers!! They are a massive credit to the community but are really struggling at the moment because of a lack of volunteers.

They're on facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/BurghleyRoad?fref=ts.
