Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I recently tried to book a bulky waste collection for a Sofa that is not fit for re-use.

I've been told that I will have to wait a month for collection as will everyone else in N4 and N15. I've also been told that I must leave the sofa out the front the night before (which I don't think my neighbours would like) and that I cannot wait in and move the sofa out myself, when Veolia arrive.

I'd be interested to hear other people's experiances- good or bad- of this service

I've had some sofas collected. Yes they insisted it had to be left out the front the night before so I put it on the pavement. They always collect on the day they say - usually very early in the morning. You usually get a date earlier than a month away, can be lucky and get it collected a week later, depends on their bookings.

I get British Heart Foundation to collect furniture which is good enough for them to sell in their shops www.bhf.co.uk They will give you a morning or afternoon slot and they collect it from inside your home. You need to make sure your sofa has the requisite label as detailed on their website, I think it's to do with fire safety. They also have a separate section which will collect electrical items.

Tilly, can I please ask you to forward me the email you sent to Veolia and their reply. Also, if you're willing to give it - the name of your street.  I will take this up as a general issue with Veolia and Haringey Waste Management.  alan.stanton@virgin.net

I am - until next May - one of the councillors for Tottenham Hale ward and the implications of your comment are worrying and not just for the two postcodes you mention. (Although that would be bad enough.)

The delay you describe could easily discourage many people from using this service; "nudging" some people into dumping their unwanted bulky waste.

Thanks Alan, an e-mail is on it's way to you.

Or do as my neighbour does (NOT!), and simply turf mattresses onto the pavement and voila a few days later the clearing fairies take it away.

Maggie- this is my concern. My sofa is in the way which is annoying. However for some people this would be a major problem, blocking exits and entrances, proving a fire hazard. This may drive people to fly tipping if they don't have another option.

Yep - I booked a sofa removal as well.  It works out that it is a month wait.  Having said that I have used them twice before and left my stuff out overnight as requested and it is always gone. It usually does not take a month though.

We are in no rush to remove the sofa so we have no complaints about the wait.  I do wonder if some people are not so patient though.. or perhaps their bulky waste service is not so well known both might account for the amount of fridges and mattresses seeing lying around.

On another note I booked some furniture to be taken by Restore, took a morning off work for the 9.30 - 12.30 slot, and they failed to turn up.  When I rang Veolia they said they would chase it up, which they did, but at 13.40 I had to give up and head into work.  At 13.50 apparently they turned up and left a cheeky 'while you were out' card.  No phone call or anything saying 'we are on the way'. That little escapade cost me £70 in lost wages (I am a temp).  Needless to say I was furious and this week, skint.
