Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering - we live on Pemberton Road, and despite keeping a clean flat, we've recently been having problems with pests. Namely, mice and cockroaches.

This is really horrible for us, and we've had houseguests this summer, so it's also been embarrassing.

Anyone out there got any advice? We've tried proofing, sealing everything up, spraying, natural repellents, traps, the lot. I can't really take the stress of it, so sadly we're thinking of selling up and leaving the area. Also I have an autoimmune illness so I really shouldn't be using lots of toxic chemicals in the flat, but they seem to be the only things that (temporarily) work.

I've tried to contact the council, as they're responsible for licensing all the food places on green lanes so they really should take some responsibility, but I've had no luck at all.

Any help or advice would be really gratefully received.....

I get the occasional mouse but poison does the job. If you don't like that, how about a cat ? ( Don't mix the cat and the poison solutions  )

Someone gave me a sonic mouse scarer which I have never used. You are welcome to it if you would like to try.

sonic mouse scarers, in spite of being based on seemingly dodgy science, do seem to have scared away our chronic mouse problem.

Cockroaches have been around for a few hundred million years so somewhat resistant to amateur pest control. If they are harbouring in your own home you may need professional help to lay traps and gel baits. If they are wandering into your home from neighbouring houses (they will travel a hundred yards or so from their harbourage) then sprays which kill on contact (I used something called Formula C a few years ago with good results) can help but ultimately you probably need your neighbour's houses to be treated professionally.

It can be done - we haven't seen any 'roaches for several years - so don't give up!

For mice - get a cat.

Great tips guys - thank you. I definitely want a cat but also would like to eliminate the roaches! I think they're coming in from outside because we get our flat treated but to no avail! I'll try to rope the neighbours in - thanks for your help!

Kirsty, we had the same roach problem when I was on the ladder, for a while. We had the council spray our house 3 or 4 times, and I forced one neighbour (who was the source) to spray as well. Call the council and ask what the policy is on making your neighbours haven their house sprayed, there's something that says they have to if there's an infestation.
Or roach problem vanished when next door was renovated. They had damp walls, and the roaches love damp.

And cats are great. However, I have 3, and still had mice in the kitchen! Useless sods...

I have the same problem at my place with the landlord who turns up whenever he wants. We've had mice and regularly see cockroaches. I was told that both hate eucalyptus oil and now have little cotton wool buds soaked in that in the areas I have seen the roaches. I also bought a sonic device that I have plugged in and I blocked off any entry points that I could think of. With all these in place, I haven't seen a cockroach or mouse in my flat in months, although unfortunately I've seen cockroaches in the communal hallway. There are sprays and powders available locally that do kill cockroaches as well. I hope this helps! All the best.
