Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Over on another conversation in a discussion about local stores, I commented that I can't wait for the cherry and grape seasons because the deals and the quality you get on Harringay's high street for those is phenomenal!

I've also recently had to admit to only becoming a Baldwins sausage addict this year. That sparked quite a conversation on Twitter about which Baldwins sausage is best.

Finally, I'll give a plug to baklava - from a number of stores including Yasir. Any baklava recommendations?

Last but not least in this wee selection, I'm a Lamachun addict. My main ports of call fro this little treat are Hala, Gokyuzu and Selale - though I know it's good elsewhere too.

Hot Nuts! Just stocked up on popcorn and pistachio chocolate for a wet afternoon movie fest for half term. Can't walk into that shop without emptying my purse.

The watermelons. Harringay has the biggest watermelons I have ever seen and it makes me weirdly happy when they return after being less prevalent in the winter. It's the small things in life, eh!

Very true! And the ladies making bread in the windows of one or two restaurants (although they are there in the depths of winter as well!)

Gozleme needs a mention - particularly the mixed one from Hala. And anything at all from the terrific Cafe Lemon...particularly pancakes and turkish coffee. And Michli & sons for the atmosphere as well as the dry goods, eggs and olives. The eggs are particularly good. Massive bunches of herbs from Yasar Halim of course. Beer from the Salisbury.

It has to be the fact that the large majority of the shops are run by people who own them, there are few chain stores, and you can always count on a warm welcome and top food whereever you go.

If we are mentioning favourite shops - Dostlar, becuase they always take notice of what you're buying and their bread is AMAZING; Al Fath for the sheer quality of their lamb products (and reasonably priced too); Yasir Halim becuase what would Green Lanes be without our giant bakery; and the little gems you find tucked away off the lanes like Moka.

Fairline for excellent value fruit and vegetables (it's a pleasure to shop there)

Not quite on the high street but George's Fish Bar

Maqsood News (mainly for Oyster Card top-up; very friendly service)

Lido and Lynbo for hardware and household items

Dazzle and Zephyr dry cleaners (have found both to be excellent)

Yayla restaurant

I love Zephyr dry cleaners - a friendly, family run business who always manage expectation in terms of timeframes for cleaning, alterations or repairs. We have our dry cleaning done there regularly and it's always immaculate. The dresses, jeans and coats repaired for us have also been excellent - made as good as new. When we first moved to the area we were nervous about finding a dry cleaner as good as our last in Archway, but in Zephyr we found them. They're a hard working team which I can't recommend highly enough!

My other Green Lanes loves are (of course!) newly opened Blend Cafe - wonderfully friendly with great homemade food and GREAT coffee! Marie Curie charity shop is lovely for a good old browse through their crockery, books and clothes. Always on it - Baldwins for their excellent customer service, cooking recommendations, Organic Free range Pork Chops, Sausages and homemade pork pies - all excellent and taste SO good. Staff and Pharmacist are always very well informed and helpful in Medi-Chem pharmacy, and I know not everyone has had the same experience, but I still rate Dr Haas and her medical team at Bridge Health Medical Practice, just off Green Lanes on Umfreville Rd, as excellent. Bianca for pizza and pasta are great when you're looking for tasty Italian food and you don't want to go over the tracks to Pizzeria Pappagone on Stroud Green road - not the atmos or furnishings of PP's, but good food all the same!

Devran needs a mention too.  We have had some great meals there.  Had a very disappointing meal at Selale last week.  It used to be a regular place for us, but we hadn't been after they expanded and the meal was so disappointing that we wont be rushing back.  I will be using Blend a lot as well.

Grown ups watch your teeth on the popcorn,
those 70's fillings won't cope withe unpopped kernels.
Have fun.
