New Cornwall Rd / Ascot Rd junction and speed bumps
The junction between Cornwall Road and Ascot Road has recently been raised to footpath level and resurfaced, apparently to allow an easier crossing for cyclists entering Chestnuts Park, which sounds a good idea.
The problem is that at the end of the new raised surface, where the asphalt goes back down to the previous road level, they left the 2 pre-existing speed bumps, resulting in most cars hitting them with the front bumper and consequent continuous bumper scratching noise.
Now, as I live in Turners Court and our front door is just in front of the bumps, and lots of flats overlook the bumps, this has turned into a real noise nuisance. Not to speak of the damage it causes to so many cars.
I don't really understand why they couldn't extend the resurfacing by a few metres, in order to "embed" those bumps in the new raised area.
Is it just an unfinished work or was it just badly planned in the first place? Can anything be done about it?

Hi, we had a problem with speed bumps in our road. We had a set right outside our house, and the noise created was excessive. We complained to the council, and to their credit (not something I say often!), they removed the bumps and replaced them with a much quieter set. Do contact the council, some departments are very helpful.

Do you know, I was thinking the very same thing myself over this weekend. I'd say that roughly 1 in 5 cars scrape its bumper on the ramp. I can hear it quite clearly as both my living room and bedroom windows overlook that part of cornwall road.
I was wondering how to go about reporting it, possibly via the councils 'report a street problem' part of their website. If I was driving over it regularly myself i'd have complained by now, so I'd be surprised if some disgruntled drivers haven't already done something.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have contacted the council and asked them to take a look at the work with the review to doing some correctional work.

Having seen your post, on Monday night I drove along Cornwall Road and nearby streets. A number of new flat-top speed cushions have been installed. But the speed bumps near the junction with St Ann's Road have been left in place as you describe. So they are now speed thumps.
I don’t understand this either. Helping to slow traffic and reduce accidents is one thing. But leaving the previous humps in place defeats the purpose of the new flat-tops. I will ask the Environment Department to copy me into the reply sent to Karen and am taking this up as ward councillor.
Luca can I also suggest that you let everyone in Turner’s Court know about this. As you know there are some very committed and active residents in the block and keeping everyone informed is always good. Given the recent issues with the building, the noise and the 100 hour pharmacy having a formal residents' association might be a good idea! As you know I worked closely with you all on various issues and your effective opposition and challenges made a huge difference to the outcomes. It could discuss and quickly take up problems like the speed thumps.
