Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Was 'upgraded' 2 weeks ago to sooper dooper Infinity tho I was quite happy with what I'd got. Since then, nothing but problems. Progress? I dont think so.

It's unstable and the BT WiFi Zone keeps taking over my internet so I cant access my own accounts. I have to keep switching off my computer.

On Friday the whole thing went down for hours. It's causing me stress and loss of time as need constant reliable internet for working at home. Anyone else experiencing problems?

I switched from Demon to BT Infinity a month ago.  I spent ages setting up my new accounts for my computer and my iPhone - I was surprised that I didn't get a set of instructions on how to do this from BT.  But I found out how to do it by googling! That worked OK.  The installation service wasn't good.  I was booked from 8 am till 1 pm but the guy came at 4 pm and stayed only 5 minutes to do the work and said he could do nothing about the actual setting up advice!   So far I have found the speed is good and it hasn't ever gone down.  I don't have the problem of the BT WiFi Zone taking over the internet; I've never switched it off (or on).  I DO have a problem of it sometimes not sending my emails for a while - that's irritating.  This doesn't happen on my phone, though.

Marek - what computer service do you provide and what is your experience?  You could private message me if you like.  I'm a freelancer in N4 and on my own as far as computer problems are concerned - but I rely on my computer to do my work.

Does your iPhone send your outgoing mail directly via your mobile phone operator's network or through your wireless connection to your Infinity connection?

Hi Andy, I'm not very sure about how all these things work.  It's when I'm on 3G that the problem has occurred in the past, rather than when I'm using my iPhone at home on the WiFi connection.  The only time I updated my iPhone software I couldn't send emails through 3G (ie my outgoing server ports were wrong or something).  I was on Demon at that time.  I rang them and they told me the correct port.  But I'm at a loss to understand why the port number changed.  I only just switched to BT and managed (on my own!) to get all my incoming and outgoing server info right on both the computer and the iPhone, although it was time consuming finding out the information as BT didn't tell me how to do it.  I'm now very nervous of updating my iPhone software but I really do have to do it as it's now limiting my Apps updates too, as well as new Apps that won't load on my old software.  Will bite the bullet and give it a go this weekend.  What I find peculiar is that none of my friends (young ones who seem to be far more computer savvy than I) understands what I am talking about (they say they don't know what incoming and outgoing server settings are - perhaps I am completely mad!  Maybe I am too old to adapt.  Perhaps Demon was different - who knows?

If you have a popular email server such as google or yahoo you don't need to worry about the incoming and outgoing server during setting up your email account with your iphone but if you go with a bit more specific email server you need to know more details.

Your friends did not experience this in their lives so this is why you cannot talk about it to anybody. You are not too old for learning as you manage with switching on your own.

Just back up your data, contacts and make a list of your software before you will update your iphone.

For a long time (since 1992) Demon used standard Internet mail systems whose port numbers, etc were well-known but last year they were bought out (yet again) by another company and they moved to a Microsoft Exchange-based mail system that used different ports (and protocols). Hence the problems you experienced. At about the same time, at least one mobile network operator (Vodafone) dropped their free outgoing mail relay service, forcing Vodafone mobile email customers to find alternative servers to point their outgoing mail to.

You're not mad or unable to adapt - a lot of people these days use public email services like Yahoo, Hotmail, gmail, etc whose settings are already encoded into just about every phone, tablet or computer email program so users are unaware of things like mail protocols, ports, etc. But it wasn't always like that and in the past, users had to know all these things themselves (and still do need to know these if you use private or less well-known email systems).

For the record, I both run and use private email systems and I still have a Demon account since 1993.

So pleased with your advice! Now I am on BT - which uses yahoo, my iPhone settings just set themselves, as you both said.  I updated my iPhone this morning and it's running perfectly EXCEPT for a few changes which I don't like.  The preloaded map is absolutely terrible - so will have to find another app as I use it all the time.  Grrr - why would they downgrade the map?

Sad to give up Demon as it was good - I was on it for about 15 years, but a) it was very expensive, b) it doesn't provide fibre optic and c) they've just been taken over by Vodafone anyway.

Thanks for the advice - all I need to do now is to sort out why my inbox doesn't work properly.  The account keeps going offline and I don't know how to turn it back on.  I keep having to switch my Apple Mail off and/or the Airport and hope for the best.  Oddly enough I can get all my mail immediately through my phone.

I have dealt with BT professionally quite a few times and the conclusion is that you don't want to have to deal with customer services.

However, their infrastructure is better supported than the competition (Virgin is a particular pain in the consumer product band).

The conclusion is: buy BT infrastructure through a BT reseller, unless you are after one of BT's exclusive features. If all you want is infinity, get it from Plusnet. They are far nicer and probably cheaper. In relation to the engineer on site it is going to be the same guy I'm afraid.

In Falkland road I've been on BT's fibre broadband for over a year, so it most likely is available in all the ladder.

I didnt want Infinity but as a BT customer they were encouraging me to take up it, for free. I dont want to have to buy anything else to get back the old service I had before they changed this. I was happy with the old home hub and my advice to others is to resist going the Infinity way... 

To get things into perspective, I'm a very happy BT Infinity customer having had an extra business phone line installed to my home along with BT Infinity for business and a block of static IP addresses last May.

I admit that being an IT professional made it easier for me to get everything up & running but believe me, it's worth persevering with BT Infinity.  There's also a thriving and knowledgeable support community at http://business.forums.bt.com (as far as I know, anyone can join this to ask questions and get help, business user or not) and BT employees often contribute to this forum.

Of the three broadband connections I have, (Virgin, Pipex ADSL and BT Infinity) Infinity is easily the best. I'd be happy to have a look at your Infinity set-up and see what the problem is.

You are lucky it's not! 

I think you have got hooked up to BT's FON service - it shares your bandwidth with other BT users. You should de-register if its a problem (it often is) - info here http://www.btfon.com/
