Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Getting rid of rubble, rotten wood, an old radiator without a car.
Hi there
Recently, a pal did some work to our massively overgrown garden, including knocking down a rotting shed to make room for a trampoline and using some of the wood to make planters and shelves. He did a great, efficient job but there is still some waste left over- some broken concrete slabs, a big sheet of rotting wood and an old radiator our home's former occupants left in the shed. I had assumed if I phoned hatingey council they could help guide me on how to get rid of the stuff, but they could only politely tell me to take it to the civic sites in Tottenham or hornsey. she had no suggestions when I told her we didn't have a car and simply told me to ask a friend with a car to help.
I appreciate the council's hands are tied, but I am still left not knowing what to do with the stuff. I also feel our car-less status should not be such a barrier in an urban area when we are all supposed to be cutting down on carbon emissions. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The radiator is easy, leave it outside and the scrap metal fairies will take care of it.
The rest, you are dependent on the kindness of neighbours. How big are the slabs and how heavy? I need four 600mm square-ish ones to control my fig tree (they have to have restrained roots) so if they can be made to fit that spec we may have a deal. If i can lift them.
The rotting wood, break it up and send it off with the landfill rubbish week by week.

The bulky collection service won't take building waste.
Haringey's refuse management is a joke. They seem to think if they make it hard to get rid of waste it magically disappears, and live in some parallel London none of us need parking spaces but all have use of a car. Result: streets covered in dumped rubbish.
What they shoud be doing is providing on demand, free collection for all waste. I'd pay double council tax for that!
(The real answer is national...disposal tax on all new goods and packaging, used to fund recycling and disposal. Penalises over packaging and over consumption AND improves the shared environment.)

We are car free and do a lot of diy building work. The options we use are a Zipcar van to the tip or Hippo bags http://www.hippobag.co.uk.
Hippo bags are not cheap but are very convenient, and of course still far cheaper than owning a car.

My pal said the same about the radiator, but I am loathe to do that I case I get desperate. What It falls and blocks the pavement or hurts someone? I was unimpressed when mu neighbours left a huge mattress outside their house (not booked for bulky collection i think, not rubbish day). The pavements are already messy and hazardous enough to navigate as iy is without me adding to it.
Also I think the concrete slabs that were usable have been taken and the rest is rubble but will check x
