Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

"Seven Sisters Community" is a new blog covering Tottenham and surronding areas of London. I have posted this on Harringay Online as a significant number of this site's members live and work in Tottenham.

The blog has been launched at the moment 'in beta', but it will be polished up shortly with a new header and some more stuff to be added. As the very first post says: "Hello World. It's been a long time coming".

It's just to do with navigating by the tube map. We identified 'Manor House' as an area within ten minutes walk of the station when we were house-hunting, and to an extent that's stuck. Same as how I have friends who live off Holloway Road and call it 'Archway' I guess.

Yep, the tube map is certainly influential in how people map London in their minds. When I did the "This isn't *******Green Lanes" thing, I was struck by how, right on the corner of Turnpike Lane and Green Lanes, 100% of people told me that the area was 'Turnpike Lane'. Not one person said 'Wood Green'.

Yes, that's certainly been my experience. I know someone who lives in Wood Green high road and calls it TL.

Odd, innit.

That's why I blurred the edges...

You're miles from Manor House - if you're over the Hackney border I'd call it Stamford Hill. Depends who you want you claim as your neighbours.

Me and my posse think South Tottenham needs its own identity. It's quite different from the Spurs end. I didn't think up the SoTo name but it's getting used, which is cool.

yes name is cachy and cool

I agree with you Pam - it absolutely needs a stronger identity distinct from the Spurs end (I've never even been there) including defining where it actually is! I'm noticing that most people seem to perceive ST as starting somewhere around Seven Sisters Station, whereas I had thought it went further south. I'm not in Hackney, but I'm on the border - which always brings up interesting naming conventions.

I reckon Soto is the N15 postcode as far as it goes East, North and South, but cuts off on the West roughly in line with Black Boy Lane and St Anne's Hospital.

What about West Green, one of the thriving settlements of the old borough of Tottenham. I think it would do it no end of good to get it's identity back. It seems to have leeched away since Beeching took its railway station. People seem to agree that it's centred at the top of Blackboy La.

... to as far as Turnpike Lane?   I kind of see a neighbourhood as walking distance, divided off by roads of housing with no shops etc.

If that reply is to me, Pam, so do I. West Green ain't that big. I had a go at defining it on Wikipedia.

West Green is partially in South Tottenham I'd say. The existence of one doesn't preclude the existence of the other.
