News just in from The Guardian.

If this news sounds slightly stale to you, it's because the ever-vigilant Hugh reported it on HoL in August last year.

1. They're 51% owned by Taylor St Baristas (as pointed out by a poster in Hugh's original thread) who do the best coffee in the City and have queues in the mornings for hours.
2. Yet again high street retailers are complaining about "unfettered competition". I'm afraid this is capitalism and what you signed up to. There's a reason the council are not allowed to restrict trade on the high street in this way and that's because in the past when they were, local businessmen would get themselves or a friend elected (It's not as hard as you think) and stop competitors from setting up too close to them using the Council's planning restrictions.
Is this poor journalism or not? I know Hugh has a stash of lovely pictures that he bleeds onto the site when things are quiet but isn't this much worse?
It's a bit of New Year rabble-rousing. Bigger companies funding smaller ones is common practice - Pret a manger is partly owned by MacDonalds. Starbucks and Costa already do thriving business in Crouch End, so they can't really complain about this one. (If it's better coffee, perhaps it will compete with Starbucks)
Not all chains are the same. I believe Costa are above board on their taxes, but Caffe Nero has not paid any corporation tax for two years https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/pages/caffe_nero_tax_dodge.
Boots the Chemist is now registered in Switzerland for tax-avoidance purposes.
I'm not sure Pret is still part-owned by McDonalds - I've looked into this a few times and last time I checked, this seemed to be old information. If someone can correct me on that I'd be interested
No need any more, John. I just wait for you to bleed on to the site instead!
" Broadsheet-style " - Guardian content exposed as 49% recycled red-top material.
People shocked at accidentally buying coffee they liked at shop that turned out to be owned by Tesco (only in Crouch End, eh?).
Big business dares to open outlet that people like...
Whatever next. Pursuing profits?
Lay off Tesco, people. It's those Australian Tolleys with their 51% taking the piss out of Pepys you should be laying into. Send them back!
I'm sure that even the most artisanal of shops is partial owned by one of the big banks as most are funded by loans.
I do wonder if the Crouch Enders would be crying into their Babychinos if they had discovered that the 49% share was held by Waitrose?
Ha ha ha! No they wouldn't!!!!
A friend who many years ago worked in marketing for Tesco's online shopping venture told me that they were instructed to aim their marketing at the kind of people who would read the Sun.
It seems like the continuing angst of some Crouch End Tweeters over H&H is wearning thin with some of their neighbours:
@radiocure hate the hypocrisy of the crouch end perspiring middle classes who slag off tesco but have frequent orgasms over gails/waitrose

Had a very good cup of coffee in Harris and Hoole today. But the ambience seems more Clerkenwell than Crouch End - all concrete and leather.
Contrary to my first visit several weeks ago, went yesterday and the coffee was awful. returned one flat white which had no taste and got a smaller cup. They did refund my money for first cup and give me one for gratis, but nevertheless, I couldn't drink it, the taste was that of over roasted beans.
Went to Coffee Circus for their usual excellent blend.
