Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last Sunday I visited Harringay Market for the first time. I purchased some good grass fed meat direct from a farm in Kent, some kale, organic and locally produced, and some delicious South American chocolate. It was a nice atmosphere. Winkworth sales director, Michael Persaud, also visited the market with his wife and two boys.

As with HoL, Harringay Market is great for the area and gives the Harringay community a real heartbeat. And like HoL, many local residents still don’t know about it. In order for the market to continue, the traders need to make a decent profit. I understand that the seafood stall didn’t return because the income generated was not sufficient. The traders need customers and it is in the interest of local residents to support the market, to promote it, and to attract more visitors.

You might have noticed some small Harringay Market Posters pinned on the posts of some of our Winkworth For Sale boards in the area. They are quite small and not very noticeable so I discussed another idea with Jessica: We could print a number of full size boards advertising Harringay Market. The problem with this is that it would require local volunteers who would allow the board to be displayed outside their house. And we would need a minimum number to make it a viable and worthwhile campaign.

So, I had the idea of starting a thread on HoL to rally support for the market and generate a list of supporters that would allow a Harringay Market advertisement to be displayed for 6 weeks outside their house. The board post would be fixed using straps not nails to ensure that no damage is caused.

I am open to suggestions and if anyone has any other ideas do let me know. If you appreciate the market and want to participate, please inbox me or respond to this thread.

One of the benefits of the market is that it can bring locally sourced foods to us in one place. And products that are not available in supermarkets or on Green Lanes...

Fruits shipped in from other countries are picked from the tree long before they have ripened. Not to mention the genetic modifications. These foods are stored in warehouses or left on the grocers/supermarket shelves to ripen before they are eaten. The flavour and nutritional potency of food that is picked before it is ripe is significantly less than fruit that is picked when ripe and eaten shortly afterwards. This is only possible with locally sourced fruit.

Meat sold in supermarkets is from animals that exist in awful conditions and are fed on grains/cereal and steroids. This meat is not tasty and is not good for you. Small local farmers that come to sell their meat at the farmers markets are likely to have animals that graze outdoors and eat mostly grass and insects and are not given steroids. That’s why I only buy meat from farmers markets or carefully selected butchers.

For those that consume dairy: A product that is gaining popularity but difficult to source is raw milk. The process of pasteurisation and homogenisation kills all the good bacteria and nutritional benefit of the milk. And skimmed milk is the worst... it strips the milk of all its healthy fat content and in effect turns the milk into a nutritionally vacant carbohydrate. There are farmers markets that sell raw milk but it is somewhat overpriced and there is an opportunity for a farmer to set up a stall at HM. I'm sure there was already some delicious unpasturised cheeses sold at HM when I was there.

Hmmmn, I do agree that estate agents boards are an unsightly clutter. It’s probably not the best idea but it was the only idea I had, and initial feedback was positive. They are not permanent fixtures and the boards would serve a purpose in getting the market known.

In response to OAE; commercial organisations that sponsor schools and events do so for the publicity as well as to help the cause. That is no secret and it would be naive to think otherwise. I don’t think I was being deceitful.

Permanent street signage would be best for Harringay Market. If anyone knows the right contacts at Haringey Council, they might allow some kind of permanent fixture? Or perhaps something temporary just on Sundays?

You may also need planning permission for displaying on an Estate Agent's board.

Schools fetes etc,. don't need permission as they are classed as Class 3D - Local Event Notices, as they are not commercial.

That makes sense. Otherwise people would be advertising all sorts of entrepreneurial endeavours on signs outside their house!! In which case I suspect it wouldn’t be reasonable for Haringey to consent. Still, some good suggestions have been made:

  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Gumtree
  • Posters outside Yasir Halim
  • Local School Newsletters and Parents Associations
  • Application for temporary street signage in Green Lanes and Wightman Road on Sundays

How about posters inside Winkworth's shop windows ?

On condition that each poster is about 12' x 6' as shown above, with no reference to Winkworths. No, I'm not naive, Elan. This is about a Sunday Market, not a property market.

Happy to stick a poster in my window
Actually do have Harringay Market posters in our window currently. They've been there for a couple of weeks. Look fabulous.

TWIS: THANK WINKWORTH IT'S SUNDAY!

Jessica, we're all delighted to see you've won the Euromillions. We're not even a teeny bit jealous.

We're greatly relieved to hear that WINKWORTH did not dispute that yours is a Sabbath Market.

Naturally, the Harringay Market will from Sunday 4th November include a spacious and comfortable stall for Winkworth Residential Sales. All expressions of interest in Harringay Ladder houses [£500K upwards - "just a short walk to the exotica of Crouch End etc"] will mean £500 upwards to Harringay Market. In the event of a successful sale arising within 12 months of this initial introduction, Harringay Market will collect the 2% + Vat normally due to Winkworth but waived out of respect for the Sabbath and the Market. We applaud this touch of élan on the company's part and rejoice that any clouds over Harringay Market have proved to have such a hmm er silver lining.

Thank Hugh for HoL. A place for everyone to express thier feelings in a safe and loving environment! I am happy to allow you to play out your object relation with me.

I might also hate estate agents too, but that would present a dilemma!
