Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just popped into Yavuzlar fruit and veg (near the bridge) and there was work being done at the back. I asked what they were doing and the answer was making a poker room. Is this a new development, poker rooms at back of shops?

No, it's been going on for a while. Talk to Tony Chapman in the Neighbourhood Action Team about it.

oh.... Thanks for information.

I assume that the Met are just waiting until the first hand is dealt before moving in...

............or the first full house.

I asked whether they had a gambling licence and the reply was that having an alcohol license was enough. I know that isn't the case- alcohol and gambling are different areas of law. So, apart from the legal gambling at the betting shops we have illegal gambling in these places or are they in some way deemed legal?

Ruth, why don't you report them and see what happens? It's illegal, and they know it.

I use that shop a lot and the shop staff are usually friendly and nice. Reporting gambling might cause some trouble for staff in the shop (and maybe for me!)

It's not started yet- will see how it pans out. Hugh says that it's not new and goes on elsewhere so probably not worth reporting anyway- perhaps the authorities just turn a blind eye. I dont know.

Seems like the wild west over here sometimes....

Indeed. They won't know it's you though. It might be me.. and I think a little tidy up along Green Lanes is well overdue anyway!

Yep, I realised that. It's my main fruit/veg shop- I'm sure that will continue.I like the folk who work there who work hard and are friendly.

I just wanted to flag up that this was happening and gain other people's point of view which has happened. seems like a. it might not be a poker room at all b. poker goes on along the Lanes and isn't a problem most of the time and isnt deemed illegal if the stakes dont go beyond a certain amount.

I was concerned there would be some big place with late night noise and disturbances going on but I have been reassured this is not the case (really!)

You know what, I've seen them playing Poker in the Salisbury.... Always the same crowd. Perhaps we should encourage this, it's a lot more fair than the bloody FOBTs.

They play a social type of poker though. You pay an entry fee and that goes in the pot. It is then knockout. Other types of poker can be very dangerous for people with an addiction.

Playing for high stakes is the problem as you say Hob. Plus in terms of the law, there are certain limits about stakes. If the owners of the place charge a fee to get in to play would be an issue too. Taking a profit from gambling would be potentially illegal, I think. Hmmm... have to see what happens at Yavuzlar when the poker room opens.
