Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Three more supersized Turkish restuarants on the way in Harringay
I've been told that planning permission has now been granted for three more Turkish restaurants on Green Lanes to expand to double shop premises.
These are:
- Selale, in Salisbury Parade (expanding into, a travel agent premises, I think)
- Antep in Grand Parade (expanding into the front part of Laundomatic).
- Diyarkabir in Grand Parade (expanding into the internet cafe).
I have also been told that Antepliler is planning to go triple soon! (They'll be moving their Baklava Salonu up to the front part of the CG Gas then combing the current three premises into one).

I cant see this as good news. We have enough large size Turkish restaurants already. Pretty soon they will all merge into one and we will have the largest Turkish restaurant in the world. What is Diyakabir taking over to expand into?

txs Hugh, was worried it might be Dave's newsagents which would be a huge crime. There are 2 internet cafes there so losing one not a major loss I guess.

Not sure but I think the internet cafe next to Diyakabir is run by the really nice Algerian guys in the computer shop next door - they have been incredibly helpful and friendly over the years, fixing my son's laptop when a friend of his stood on it and numerous other small repairs. I agree with Ruth that the relentless edging out of all the smaller businesses by the giant restaurants is not good news for Green Lanes.
A few weeks ago we walked up on a Saturday night looking for somewhere to eat and there were long queues everywhere until we got to Flame, which was half-empty. Seems like the larger restaurants might even be taking custom from their smaller neighbours - probably why they're all looking to expand.

Your right about the internet cafes and useful repairs. I have taken things round there for fixing and advice.
I cant understand the mentality of queuing to get into these big, busy places. I prefer smaller, quiet myself but maybe I am just old.. It's a shame that we are losing the smaller places all along Grand Parade. This is now an issue just as much as the expansion of the betting shops. The future could be that.. lots of big Turkish restaurants interspersed with betting shops and not much else.

Yep... as obesity rises to higher levels, let's eat more!
This concentration of restaurants goes against the whole diversity thing and also means less opportunities for 'pop up' shops/facilities for community use. It goes against the Mary Portas ideas of reviving the High Street for communities/residents as well as for visitors. Not happy about this trend but what can be done?

I dont think there has been much success in the past on objections against what goes on down our high street eg. with betting shops and pubs being turned into furniture shops. It's not very encouraging looking at the history.

Well, I'm grateful it's not a Starbucks or Costa or Sainbury's Local or betting shop!

that's saying something isnt it when we say we are grateful it's not a Starbucks etc.. I might prefer the betting shop to be honest, at least that would be closed at night and I wouldnt have people down my street making loads of noise and slamming their car doors as they depart after a night out in the restaurants! Plus you dont get all those cooking smells from betting shops and the charcoal smoke drifting through the air which gets right into the flat....
