Well, you don't have to pay for them. There is so much renovation work going on around the area, stuff that is useable is dumped in skips all the time. In fact, you are about a week too late for a skip just up the road from me, which was half-full of breeze blocks, concrete blocks etc. A house that was being extended was subject to a first-builder screw-up, so most of the new bits had to be taken down by a second builder, who then used new materials, dumping structural blocks in the skip. I managed to scavenge a few for the garden, but regret that they took the skip away a week or so ago. Anyway, just walk around, and you'll find all the stuff you need. Want a new kitchen? No need to buy units, just scavenge them from skips or front garden dumps. Buy a wood burning stove and never pay for fuel again. And so on.
