Can I just say, that I saw Jessica first raise the idea on HoL about a market in Harringay about 3-4 months ago and the way she has just grabbed the bull by the horns and made this happen is admirable.
An amazing event, great mix of good quality suppliers, (didnt feel like a cheap car boot sale), lovely atmosphere, really nicely laid out using what was already in the playground. I didnt actually feel I was in a playground.
I took loads of pics and did find it annoying as every stall had customers and I just couldnt get the shots I wanted, but that is testiment to what a success it was.
I know the council are planning on opening up a market in Tottenham, I really hope that they put their pride aside and examine the model used here to replicate and hope we dont end up with a place you can buy 8 toilet rolls for a pound.
Really inspirational project & a pleasure to see it come to fruition :) xXx

Thanks Ant it sounds cool. I havent been to the market yet but will get round to it. I love as you say that it gives you the chance to catch up with people and have a natter and through this you make friends. I think this is great that it is promoting neighbourliness. I dont seem to have many supporters on here so far in this thread but I think this is great and am trying to promote the recognition that a market catering to all of the communities needs from cheap bogrolls ( being the term that was originally used to term cheaper commodities) to more expensive items, an eclectic mix of goods that would draw all members of the community out together and could help create a more cohesive community.
My photo project was just food, so i took out the books/art/jewellery & wasnt comfortable taking pics of kids in the facepainting to put on net
For reference, cheap bog rolls can be found on green lanes. It was not snobbery, just a comment to denote that we have a lot of £ saver/poundland/warehouse clearence shops.
The market was not expensive, cherries were £2 there & £6 in supermarkets & probably £50 in Crouch End ;) I hope the market brings/continues to bring something different to what we see in our high streets was my point
Seema I have already explained why I think cheaper commodities should be included in a market that may potentially be set up in Tottenam in my post above despite them being available in Green lanes and Poundland perhaps you missed reading this post?
Its great that cherries were 2.00 although your picture did'nt seem to show many cherries in each box for the price, I thought they looked scanty. Generally I cannot afford to buy much fruit its to expensive and even that price for such a scantly amount would not be enough for my family to have more than a few each. I am sure as Ant said there are some bargins and I am not against the local market (although I have already been banned by Paul I would have to come in disguise rather than have £1 free range eggs thrown at me) ... it seems to be a small one and would not be suitable to have space for the green lanes bog rolls.
My vision is for a larger Market in Tottenham at the hub of where the riots were, where there would be space to include a bigger variety of stalls to suit all needs and pockets.
There was an open air market in Tottenham.... in the Eighties. The market was based in Stoneleigh Road car park and I think it was held either two or three days a week. Unfortunately, like so many things locally, it wasn't a success and it closed a few weeks later.
People should remember why Harringay market could be a long-term success.... first of all, it probably offers a wide range of produce on sale, and more importantly, IT'S NOT MANAGED BY THE LOCAL AUTHORITY.
Unless somebody independent of Haringey turns up with a true plan for a market which embraces the diversity of the area, then this will end up being the latest in a long line of ideas which have been backed by the local council that have been doomed to failure.
Paul I am expressing my opinion and I am not being rude to anyone. Your comment is rude and certainly un neighbourly. Is it necessary?
Please, Everyone ! Our local lovey-dovey community website is no place for even a hint of rudeness.
As to the Market, if you eat less cheaply and less aspirationally, you'll obviously need less, or even fewer, bogrolls - cheap or luxuriously indulgent. Simples.
which? less cheap, or more cheap? Would have thought cheaper diet >> more bogrolls?
Paul I was not saying I wanted to see this local market changed without even going there, either I am not being clear in my comments in which I am sorry to cause confusion or you have not read my threads properly, the local market seems to be working well for the locals who go and this is fantastic! Great news. What I was commenting on was the comment that suggested this market be used as a model for a market in Tottenham and that the commentor didnt want to see the Tottenham market ending up full of cheap bog rolls (commodities) and this was why I made my comments. I would like to see a market in Tottenham that serves all the community and has a varied selection of produce for all residents and all pockets and needs that is all.
