Is this Haringey's most confusing parking sign?
Here's my entry in Haringey's most confusing parking sign competition.
This unlovely piece of street furniture is on Oakfield Road. I find it hard to interpret its meaning while sitting down at leisure trying to decipher it.
Remember this is aimed at motorists, driving vehicles and who have just a few seconds to work it out.
This is the most complex sign in Haringey because all motorists wishing to park are expected to have at least some knowledge about football games (presumably "Match" doesn't refer to Bryant and May. Perhaps "Event" has some relationship to soccer as well).
In order to make the entrapment complete, the council have provided a flip-down board which randomly changes the meaning of the sign.
Can anyone come up with a better/worse example than this?

My upset with these signs is that I'm expected to know its a match day. I got caught on a Monday Night at 8.30 when going to swim at Clissold pool.
I know why the signs are put up and appreciate how frustrating it must be to live on a road where people park for major events. However, when I called the council to ask how I was meant to know it was a match day and was told I could look online.I paid my fine as I knew I'd contravened the sign but it didn't half frustrate me! I now ensure I check match days when I'm going swimming. However I'm sure it won't be the last time I'm caught out by the match day rule.

Lizzie we might be in the minority who do not follow soccer games. Oakfield Road is on the north western side of Finsbury Park – a long way from major matches.
Amongst the minorities discriminated against by this sign, are non-football fans and those for whom English is their only language.
And what's an Event Day when its at home? Is a big birthday party an Event Day? How many Events do we need to be aware of? At least this electronic medium allows some to e-vent their dissatisfaction.

It may well be. The stadium you mention is about one and a half miles by road from Oakfield Road. Surely there are other events in London? But no particular "Event" location is mentioned on the sign.
If the authorities wanted to start listing all events within a one mile radius of Oakfield Road that might have an impact on parking – plus exceptions to the exceptions - they will need a bigger sign.

I have the park behind my house so am directly affected by events there yet they don't bother to tell me about them. Looking on Haringeys website for these events is mostly fruitless as well. Many a time someone has asked me what's going on in there (not necessarily a big event) expecting me to know but I have no idea either.
Did you know that quite often Haringey allows football coaches to park in there for night matches? Huge great spotlights, engine noises.......

I'm wondering if the bottom flap has a sign on its flip side that says something like 'Event and match days restrictions APPLY TODAY' ?

For years I didn't even notice the flap, I must have got lucky and there were either no matches or no traffic wardens when I parked there. Until I got a fine, then I realised the bottom part of the sign was on hinges and could do the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde trick.

Flipping heck James, when they flip the flap, what time of the flipping day is the flap flopped?
Is there a flipping department of the council to do this? Does a Flipping Officer flop it at flipping midnight, or perhaps at 6 am? Don't forget that the flipping officer has to return to reverse the flop at some point. How many Flipping Officers are required?
How many flipping signs like this one are there in the Borough?
What I'm really getting at James is, how much flipping notice do we get of the flop?
The only way this flipping sign could be more of a flop would be if the flipping panel itself had tucked inside a flipping daughter panel, that could randomly vary the meaning of the main flip-flop.

They're flipped at around 6am on the event day by a man in a little van with a ladder on top. He's also the guy who empties the P&D machines. (Oh the joys of early morning dog walks)

There is no consistency between the councils and if you live close to borders it can get even more confusing. For me, as a motorcyclist, I can park for free in Haringey but not in Islington (where I should use a designated bay) so it's very easy to be caught out if you park on the wrong side of the road. Note that that sign only says Finsbury Park and not which borough it's in. Are there corresponding signs in Hackney and Islington I wonder? All saying Finsbury Park? How would a visiting motorcyclist know where to park legally?
As for the match and event days, I live here yet I'm not told about them. Sometimes I may not go out so wouldn't see the signs at the end of the road (which are only flagged up on the day) so wouldn't know that some thing is happening. And not knowing this I can't advise any of my visitors whether it's free to park or not. That alone puts them off. They expect that I should know but I don't and to go on-line to find out (something in the park or the Emirates?) is not always convenient.
