Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last week the water went black for a few days which we thought was the wash from cleaning the weeds at the bottom.  This week the water level is really low - just about ankle deep instead of the usual 4-5 foot- when this happens it usually comes back in a day or so - not this time!  Any thoughts?

It's not low up by Hornsey Station: it's about a foot higher than it usually is. Thames water have placed a ( temporary I think ) dam at the installation just before the River crosses under Wightman Rd.

They have also fenced off the entry by Hornsey Station so people can't walk along the path. A notice says this is temporary while they investigate " tripping " - presumably electrical rather than pharmaceutical.

Thanks John - glad you could explain it - hopefully it will be sorted soon - we're on Warham Road in the blocked off bit....

We are on Seymour and have had daily divers in the waterway for the last week or so with heavy machinery, perhaps this has something to do with it too.

Perhaps Cara it is but usually they use the machinery to clean the bottom of the river and the water level is controlled elsewhere..if you learn any more from the divers be great to hear....

Next time I see them I'll ask. Currently it looks like when my dad used to make home brew, with a yukky white film on top.

Rather them than me. I'll keep my diving to the likes of the Red Sea.

We had a flier in the post -- they're cleaning the channel (when it's covered, e.g. north of Seymour) so I think that's why they lowered the water level.

you are silly, thats my thought the level today was over the pipes

water level was very high today, virtually up to the grass banks by the back of the mosque.  I guess they are keeping a close eye on it.  Trying to remember what was there before the mosque.  There was a petrol station across the road from the mosque. Can anyone recall?

Well, in 1932 the Hornsey and Wood Green Synagogue was on the site with William Charles Ediss motor engineers next door. The whole stretch where the estate is now was a real commercial centre with grocers, bakers, confectioners, a chemists and a post office. More recently - anyone around there long enough to recall?

I'll flick John D a note. He lives next door. In the meantime, the closest I have is a 1970s oil painting of te Hornsey Station end of Hampden Original at Bruce Castle:

Thank you.  I have lived in the area since 1986 but can't for the life of me remember what was there.  I remember the petrol station and there was an off license on the other side of Hampden Road and opposite a news agent.  But I am having a complete blank of what was on the 4th corner of that little junction

It's very strange, disturbing even. I remember the petrol station, off licence, newsagent too. But I have no recollection of the corner where the Mosque is. I know there was a synaogue at one time but I don't think it was there when I moved here in 1998.
