Endymion Road Crime
I see all the 'Safer Neighbourhood' and 'Neighbourhood Watch' signs but they seem to do no good. We were burgled back in May, it was daytime but we were at work. It was quite a violent break in; they kicked in the door, literally in half but were rumbled by our brilliant neighbours and fled with only a handful of goodies. A bagful of finger prints and a foot print still didn't help catch the crim.
The insurance got a guy round to path the door until they could get a new one fitted. That night, while lying in bed, wide awake. There was a scratching at the door. I got up and crept to the door to see someone's hand and what looked like a screwdriver coming through the letter box. I went to the side window and the perp must have heard me because he put his hood up and ran off down the street.
I did then think that I should have grabbed hold of his hand and kept him there until the police came but you know...hindsight and all that.
Then...yep, there's another. Over the Christmas period I wasn't using my motorbike. There's 2 locks round a lamppost, someone cut the thin lock and tried removing some parts off the bike to get the other lock off. They must have been at the bike for some time to remove the parts but whether they were rumbled or got sick of trying I don't know but they may be back.
I'm not sure of the options but if there are any nearby residents want to knock heads, give us a shout! in the mean time there are extra locks, alarms and security camera up. What a way to live.
Does anyone know if we get regular bobbies beating our street?

I'm so sorry to hear your story SC, how horrible for you. Maybe Endymion Road suffers more than other roads - bigger front gardens to hide in and not overlooked by houses on the other sides, more traffic noise? There are other folk on the site who live there too, I don't know if they have the same problems. And have you talked to the Safer Neighbourhood Team - they can be contacted here. I don't know what else to suggest that you've not already done - I'm sure they will help.

No I'm not insinuating that we get a masked vigilante group to patrol the streets but wouldn't it be funny to see some 80 year old in a Batman mask scaling the lamp post. I meant something like a Neighbourhood Watch group as we have the signs on our street but I've never heard of a group on our road existing, or just looking out for one another if we're away etc.

I thought being on a main road would have been safer than the dark and quiet Venetia Road, for example. Our neighbours have been broken into too but we've since put video cameras on the building. I'll be contacting the Safer Neighbourhood Team who were attentive at the time but the extent of the help only went as far as telling us to get better locks. We never got a response to the finger and foot prints either which is a pity, just means they are still out there robbing some other poor sod.

Yes, it most likely would be. But you don't know what goes through their minds...is it just opportunism to see what their is or is it planned and organised where they know your comings and goings and what you may have, valuables-wise, in the property OR was it some homeless guy looking for a place to squat after seeing our door had been kicked in and patched up, thought it would be an easy entry.
When we were in Mexico a few years back they have a guy who sits on a chair at most street corners. You park your car on the street and the guy patrols the street, you give him some cash when you return. It's not official but it's a pretty good deterrent. I'm not sure if that sort of thing would work here, whether for cars or houses. Each terrace/block/street could have a security guard? Gated communities in the US have that. Anyone have thoughts on that?

Really sorry to hear about your ordeal. I have often wondered what would be a good solution. I haven't come up with one yet. I know people recommend better locks, cctv, alarms etc but I can't help coming back to the conclusion that in the long run if someone really wants to break in, they will.
I have fitted locks on all my internal doors so if someone breaks in then it is harder for them to get around the house. The downside is that they could just end up smashing down all my internal doors, causing more damage.
One possible solution would be for Haringey to have some of these types of people around

break-ins go in waves up the ladder and I agree that if they want in they'll get in one way or another. We've got locks to the internal doors but once they're in the main door they have all the time and privacy to get into each room.
I love the ninja, that is an awesome idea. Are you offering your services? But I'm not sure how I would feel to be hanging out my smalls and find him lurking in the bushes :)
