Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

BBC1's new version of Great Expectations included a fabulous performance as Miss Havisham by Gillian Anderson. Harringay residents may be pleased to know to that until she was eleven years old Gillian lived in Roseberry Gardens N4 and later in Albany Road N4

Proper puts us in our place, eh!

Okay, having received and redirected much mail (and even one caller) for our address doppelgangers in the far more salubrious Rosebery Gardens, Crouch End, is there any way we can double-check which Rosebery/Roseberry Gardens she lived in?  I suspect we're looking at a confusion with the N8 road here.

The Times article, possibly properly fact-checked, which is posted on her official website mentions Rosebery Gardens, Crouch End (N8). The N4 identification comes from Wikipedia, which can be pretty misleading on small details like this (lots of the editing can be based on uncontrolled Googling, for eg).

Apparently she went back to her old house quite a few years back and found it transformed. I find this a more plausible phenomenon in Crouch End, than here...  In interviews, she mentions Crouch End as somewhere she walked through every day as a child, not, for eg. Green Lanes.

The addresses I gave were the ones given in Wiki, which I had assumed were correct, but, there is an interview with her in The Telegraph today, which includes the following extract:

We talk a bit about…. her love of London. “It feels like home and it has for a long time.” Her eyes light up when she talks about the flat she lived in as a child in Haringey, about the “hedge smell” of Crouch End.

So, maybe Harringay was the wrong link. What a pity!

I corrected this on Wikipedia in July 2010 after and checking with Rosemary Anderson, her mother, via email. My correction stated:

she lived for five years in Roseberry Gardens, [[Crouch End]] and finally for 15 months in Albany Road, N4

So, I had it from the horse's mouth. It was definitely Crouchie.

Talking about naming Harringay people - Hugh, have you got Marjorie Sigley on your list?

At Markfield and Woodlands Park Schools in (the Borough of Tottenham) North London, she began by adapting stage classics for performance by young children who mostly come from underprivileged backgrounds. The children were also encouraged to write, cast, design, produce and star in their own productions

Now, she is worth naming! I remember her at both schools. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marjorie_Lynette_Sigley

And BTW, the Harringay Timeline seems to have faded .. no new entries for ages !

Yes, thanks Stephen. If you seethe People from Harringay category on WP, it likely means the person is on 'my list'

Are we so desperate to be name-checked just to give that Cork twit Norton a braying sneer?

Name check is what the police do when they stop you in the street. Haringey was mentioned

My excuse, John: ironically quoting AntK above. If I'm not careful, I'll be 'referencing' next.

We might have had more cause for pride if when she moved back to London she had come to the borough. However, she chose the greener pastures of Belsize Park.

Don't worry Christopher, the borough's bustin' with other B list celebs. Just search Twitter on #crouchend and you'll get a sense of people's thrill at local BLC spotting.

Snort! Well, dont worry Hugh, Christopher, I promise, as of now, I'll working on converting myself from no-one much to an A-lister. That could be my NY resolution...
