Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

After months of work getting the premises at 5 Wightman Road ready, Kevin Vanthem and his team this morning opened Cafe Moka for a trial run.

I popped in to say hi and see how things were going. I was impressed. Kevin and his team have done a great job with the place. I love the eclectic retro look and feel. People seemed to be coming in and naturally drifting towards the kitchen to say hi and then easily falling in to conversation with one another. It feels like Moka has the potential to become a truly local hub (and we're promised top-notch wifi soon too).

Whilst I was there, I was lucky enough to meet HoLers James and Lindsay (pictured below, in the garden) and Osbawn. I also met Sam (yet to discover HoL) whose family has lived on Wightman for the past 40 years, between globe-trotting.

Below is a preview. Do pop along say hi to Kevin, his partner, his mum and the team and try a coffee. They were hard at work making a tart when I left. So I guess that should be ready about now. Mmmm......

(By the way, I learned today that as well as being the name borne by an illustrious Soho forbear and a style of coffee, Moka is also a place in Mauritiusclose to where Kevin's family is from).

Just came back from a coffee & muffin at Moka. Really great little place. Beautifully done up, lovely garden. We will be back! Next to try the breakfasts...

Oh, apparently there is wifi now too.

Really pleased to hear it.

I dropped in on the way home just after lunchtime and met another HoL member who said he was really enjoying his lunch. The guy he was with said nothing - just smiled at me (but he was only about 10 months old so I didn't take umbridge)

Hi

My friend and I went in for Breakfast on Sat (13th Aug) we really liked it nice decor friendly service and good food.

Have recommended this to others.

The brownies are amazing.  I really hope it does well.

Oh man, I've really gotta check this place out! If only I still worked from home...
the fresh tarts at lunch are amazing too. Don't worry abt the short menu, it's just like having amazing specials every day - we're going back.
We had sausage rolls in moka this morning and they were delicious. I think someone asked about high chairs before and I did see one there today. I took my daughters in last week and Kevin made them chicken sandwiches specially as they weren't keen on the tart. He used lovely roast chicken and bread for their sarnies. My only worry is the cakes. Supposed to be on a diet and the brownies are at a guess about 2000 weightwatchers points each...
Just popped into Moka today to see what it's like. It looks really nice, small but cosy. It's great having somewhere that sells fresh cakes. I had a chat with Kevin who said they do fresh bread at the weekends. I'm so pleased that we have somewhere like this locally. Normally I go to Crouch End but now I have a closer option. It's open 7 days a week and once the Summer is over it will be staying open until 8pm. It sounds like Kevin has been working really hard to make this a succes so I hope everyone can support him.

We have popped in a couple of times over the last week or so, including with my children and owner has been very friendly. Has created very stylish but relaxed atmosphere with delicious cakes etc. Also very happy to tolerate children which is great (for me anyway). Planning a children's menu I believe. Am slightly worried about how long the lovely upholsterd chairs will last if I keep going in with my boys... Really hope the cafe will be a success.

Yaay, Harringay Online member Katrina has picked this up on Moka (I dare to assume from us) and written about it in Time Out. Well done Moka.
Checked this place out for the first time yesterday - VERY impressed! I love what they've done with the space, and it was quite busy even on a Tuesday afternoon. Everyone seemed to be enjoying it, and I had a nice chat with Kevin who is super friendly and full of ideas for the place. I wish I lived a little nearer, but it's well worth the trip. If you work from home I'd definitely recommend it as a bolthole as the Wifi is now up and running and is nice and quick.
Totally share people's enthuasism about the cafe - a really lovely spot, great food (and coffee) and nice staff. Glad to see it will be opening later - Kevin mentioned when I went in that the early mornings weren't so busy, but I'd hope that he'd get some trade when people are leaving work and wanting to pick up the occasional treat ..
