No Osbawn, just to clarify, I replied to Dane's comment that because he didin't do things like that as a kid, then nobody else should.
@ William Booth: It's exactly this kind of thinking that's created this problem. Take away the individual's resposnibility for own actions, create a blame culture. "it's not my fault, innit, I grew up in a bad area (instert whatever excuse you want here), so I can't be held responsible" Bollocks!

Oh make your mind up Osbawn..

If 'upbringing is irrelevant' why then do the tories continually promote two parent, one male and female parented families and make such a fuss about gay parents or one parent families.. ?

You are amusing..

Osbawn and dane66, you might appreciate this one:

Everyone else who wants to hug a hoodie, look away now. http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r129/JohnCarberry/7ft3.gif

Anette, note well the ancient Irish tackling skills and uniform. Twelve centuries ago we put in some useful practice on the Viking hoodies. No son of Sigurd was safe from our TLC. We haven't forgotten.

Much appreciated

@dane66 - The Head Teachers' leader raises some issues about upbringing and parenting:

To those who have worked secondary schools, the absence of manners and common decency to which you refer comes as little surprise.  I  concur with your assessment entirely.

Thank you for this link which is very interesting.

Good link Paul. James Treadwell, the criminologist from the University of Leicester is the most accurate commentator I've read so far. And yes children do need to be taught boundaries; to say 'no'. that short, simple word is an important part of any child's upbringing," says Mr Lightman, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders.
Really interesting. Lack of manners...

This is indeed worth a read and a re-read.  I still think the behaviour is completely inexcusable.

Agreed.

Alternatively, as David Starkey put it on Newsnight last night, "the whites have become black". Good god. Between that sort of ridiculous and inflammatory comment (I think the extent of Starkey's knowledge of young dispossessed people must be his few days on Jamie's Dream School) and the organising of ethnically-centred vigilante groups, we must be extremely careful that a major set of ethnic tensions don't come out of these sad events. Our area has been pretty well-integrated - I heard Tottenham is the most diverse constituency in Europe in terms of languages spoken, for example - and it would be a disaster if that diversity was blamed.
