Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
To your marigolds litter pickers of Fairland Park
5 carrier bags full.
5 plastic bags of water bottles, food containers, fag packets, beer cans, fizzy drink cans, sweet wrappers plus one shit filled nappy. It was my rage which drove me round the park in a frenzy using the floating carrier bags adorning the park to collect the rubbish. While other parents seemed content to let their kids play amongst the crud, I simply could not sit and look at it.
So, be warned, fellow litter pickers, you might need to pop a pair of marigolds and a bin bag or two into your bag along with the drinks and snacks.
Rest assured I will be reporting this to the council, in fact I'm probably doing it now as you read this. I did not take a picture of the rubbish as I was too furious to remember that I'd got my camera with me so you will be spared the shots of a shitty nappy and piles of half-eaten food... this time.

I did that exact same thing 4 or 5 weeks ago on a sunny Sunday afternoon with the park packed. All I got was bemused looks from other parents as I was chasing cigarette packet wrappers, beer/soft drink cans and the like around the park. I confess to not being able to face the walkway beside the football court as it would have taken me all afternoon to clear even just a tenth of the litter there :-(

Very impressed. I despair at Ducketss Common every weekend.
On the topic of Fairland Park I was thinking the other day that it could be a fab venue for kids to hold their very own toy and book flea market. In Denmark many towns do this very successfully. It is a great way to recycle, the kids make a bit of money for new toys and it can be a really fun way to meet other kids in the neighbourhood. Does anyone know whether this is that something which would require endless council applications?

I think this in an excellent idea. I don't know that it needs any council intervention if there is parental supervision. I'll pass the idea on to the Friends of Fairland if you like.

Unfortunately with the cutbacks we are having to resort to chasing litter ourselves sometimes and we do so because we (as opposed to the litter louts) are proud of our park.
It would be useful to know if you are also noticing whether or not the bins are full to overflowing when the litter on the ground is bad. Feel free to email Chris Poore of Parks chris.poore@haringey.gov.uk to request a Hygiene visit. Anyone can do this and the more people the better.

Re Toy book market. An excellent idea. Can I suggest starting from September onwards and late Sunday mornings might be ideal as Tennis lessons also happen at this time in the park (?) Dane66 would you be happy to lead with this, with help from others? I don't see this needing council bureaucracy.

I think it should just be done as ad hoc one offs to get more participation e.g. an autumn session and then maybe again in Spring if it is successful. Ample warning so kids get a chance to tidy up and decide what they have outgrown. Would love to lead on it but will have to have think about it. Full time job and a kid diagnosed recently with diabetes makes for very little spare time. Sunday morning sounds like a good time. I guess advertising is the main thing and getting enough people to "sign up" for it to make it fun is the time consuming bit. Except for that it is just a case of turning up with a blanket/brolly.
