Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have to find a new GP in a hurry and have not had great luck in the past. My partner and i are adopting and my SW has pointed out that my GP made some comments on my adoption medical form which she took to be that basically he doesn't approve of lesbian couples adopting.  (I've since read them and she isn't being over-sensitive on my behalf). We are now adopting 3 kids and i can't put the issue off anylonger. So can anyone recommend a good GP, ideally who is or maybe good with kids and is or maybe not homophobic.

Unfortunately, the first one we had round here was quite shockingly aggressive and unhelpful  (again after i had mentioned my sexuality) so it's made me think that who is nearest isn't necessarily the best way to choose. And 3 kids probably means we are going to be seeing a lot of him/her, and i want to protect them from as much unreasonable cr*p like that as i can.

I live in N15 on woodlands park road (near st anne's and west green road).

really grateful for any recommendations at all.

WHAT???? The council spend a fortune on fostering and you're prepared to take on the entire cost yourselves and someone with a couple of Bachelor's degrees gives you grief? I thought Harringay was much more "right on" than that.

Clocktower practice in Crouch End?

I'm sorry but I am outraged by this - is that not illegal for people who are in positions of professional power to be homophobic!!?? Make a complaint to the British Medical Council - they would like to hear about such misconduct. Anyway, I can recommend Umfreville Road GPs (and Dr Smeaton in particular) but that maybe out of your post code area. Hope the adoption process goes well.

In the mid-1990s I had a Tottenham GP (I forget her name) tell me that I'd probably be ok not to have a smear test as long as I "wasn't doing anything too perverted". I should have complained but was too stunned and upset to think clearly.

I'd also be interested in a good GP recommendation aound Turnpike Lane tube area....

Thanks guys. It is outrageous and i am going to complain. Just as soon as i have another GP.

So thanks for the suggestions.

Sally. That's if you can get am appointment there...
very true... is that not just all GPs though? and it will get worse with government cuts!!

Well, I never used to have much trouble at the Doctor's on Weston Park when we lived there... they had this revolutionary boking system that involved a pencial and a diary and common sense!

This is absolutely shocking, I do hope you plan to complain?

Understandable if you don't want to tell us where you're registered, but I'd honestly want to know if this was my practice as I don't think I'd stick around knowing this sort of thing was going on.

I go to Dr Gor in Crouch End (he's been my GP since I moved to London 12 years ago) and the practice is great. They are on Crouch Hall Road.

A friend of mine is trying to adopt and the foster parents have stopped the adoption as they don't like the fact that my friend is single.  Very sad. Good luck and I hope it all work out for you.

It is shocking but site admin would prefer it if you didn't share the name online. Of course it's up to individual members what messages you choose to exchange privately via HoLMail.

I'm sorry to hear you've been subjected to this - shocking behaviour from a doctor.

I have 2 children and use the Bridge House Practice on Umfreville Road. We live off St Anne's Rd so it's a bit of a walk. I was recommended to go there by my midwife when I was pregnant with my first child.

One of the lovely doctors has recently retired but his replacement (can't remember her name) is really good, we are actually registered with Dr Haas but see either doctor. Only thing I would say is their appointment system is a bit of a nightmare - BUT they will always see the children the same day if I think it's urgent enough.

Good luck with your adoptions, I hope the experience with this doctor hasn't spoiled any of your excitement.

I can agree with JulieB about the Bridge House Practice in Umfreville Road. I have seen  Dr Haas and Dr Brothers (both female) and they are both lovely. I can't imagine either of them being homophobic.
