Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
New to owning a cat
We've taken the plunge and adopted a cat from the RSPCA. She is a beautiful little black cat, about 1 year old, with the biggest green eyes ever. She's been with us since lunchtime and has already played with the children, had some food and water, explored the whole house and generally looked very cute.
She doesn't seem keen on going into the kitchen which is where her litter tray is. Any advice on how I should encourage her in and get her to use it? I think maybe it's a bit too open and light for her in there - the whole of the back wall is glass and she seems to be intimidated by it.
Her current favourite place is under my son's bed where she's found and laid claim to the old cot matress that is stored under there. She's also discovered that the corners of my house and under the bookcase are very, very dusty.
I've never had a pet before so any other general cat owning advice will be gratefully received.

My cat doesn't bother with his magnet for the catflap anymore, he's watched the other cats break in and just uses his claw to lift it up from the outside like they do.

Can I just say, please make sure you keep her in at nights once she is allowed out. It's safer for her (and for the local bird population!).

The microchip cat flap is a new one on me, I only got as far as the infra-red ones, where a device on the collar sends out a signal that triggers the door to open. One triggered by the ID microchip would be cool, except it makes you wonder just what powerful RAYZZ are being beamed into the cat's neck 24/7.
off to get my tin hat.

How powerful do you think the rays beamed at your oyster card to make it work are?

So the RAYZZZ dont come from the chip, the chip is just a receiver? I can't boil eggs with my Oyster card?

I would definately recommend the microchip cat flap. A huge plus is that the cats don't need to wear collars which can get caught on things. The other plus is that it can shut the cat in at night when it's dusk and it opens again when it gets light in the morning (it won't shut your cat outside when it closes it just doesn't let it out again once its come in). This is great if you're out for a late one and won't be around to get the cat in (I too like to have them in, away from foxes, at night).
We really enjoyed our microchip cat flap until the kind Bengal cat from Cavendish road broke it for us (4th cat flap it has broken now) - no need to worry, the manufacturers were very helpful and told me how to fix it :)

Cat-free at the mo so this is theoretical, but I'll bear in mind for if/when a cat arrives here again.

I'm pledged to at least a year off, after 26 continuous years. It's such a treat going away for weekend or on holiday with no cat-care to sort out. But yes it's tempting, so far I keep the urge down with next door's brood.
Sally's lot seems to be taken anyway, kittens are easier to shift cos of the Cute factor. Never read the comments on Youtube kitten videos, they are nauseating.

I think she's got a couple of Mama cats too. I took an adult cat (well he was a teenager then) as they are harder to home. *tugs at heartstrings*

I like the sound of this dusk/dawn cat flap - can you tell me the brand?
The RSPCA lady warned me about putting a collar on, they see a lot of 'collar injuries' apparently, she said if we did want one we should get a quick release one which comes off if it gets caught in something. Also she said to keep the cat in at night time.
Mog (the children thinks she looks like the halloween cat in Meg and Mog) had a couple of hours alone yesterday when I went on a farm trip with my daughter, she was fine but very pleased to see me again. This morning she seems much more frisky and is constantly climbing onto my mantelpiece trying to lick/eat a plant on there.
