Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi Haringey I need your help. I live (N17) and I work shifts and this makes it near impossible to find childcare. My 4 year old son goes to Stonecroft childrens centre (N8) until 3:30 mon-fri and we need someone to collect him and have him until 7pm. As I work shifts I occasionally (say 3 out of 4) need someone for weekends too. worst case for weekends would be 9am-7pm.

Wages are negotiable.

need to be very reliable and flexible on a week by week basis. Speak English and or Slovak, Czech Polish

Hi Ryan, there are plenty of babysitters and nannies around (not sure whether there are many reading HoL though) but for such an intensive childcare schedule you best option may be a registered childminder. I am a great fan of childminders as they are all Ofsted registered and inspected and have more training than many nannies, etc.

You can find a list of local ones on the Council website

Thanks for taking time to reply. Its hard to find one who is able to tolerate shift workers and weekends. And when you find that they dont do school pick ups. Im gonna go through your link and spend all day on the phone again :-)

Hi Hugh,

Thanks you too for your reply. yes I did try childcare.co.uk and I even paid the £25 to join and in the 3 months I was a member no one was available and the only person to contact me was a 14 year old girl. not really what I wanted. I have no problem paying these sites if the have what I want but in my experience they are just a waste of money.

Sounds like a really wonderful service!! Sorry to have pointed you towards such a pile of pants, but your feedback will no doubt be of interest to other members. So thanks for taking the time to leave it. Very best of luck with your search.

Have you tried putting a notice up at the children's centre? Maybe another parent there might be interested or possibly one of the nursery staff might be interested in taking on some extra work?

Or if you have a big enough home to have a spare bedroom, you could consider an au pair? That would have the flexibility you are looking for - normal deal is that they work a maximum of 25-30 hours a week. They get free board/food plus often the employing family pay for a part time language course and "pocket money" - just googled and the British Au Pair Agency Association said the minimum for a 30 hours week is £80 a week.

Hi Ryan

I know some one who may be interested but they are not on hol! so if  i can have your contact details i will certainly pass them on.

Thanks.

Melanie/Ryan, best to trade contact info by private messaging

yes we had the notice idea.... the day his school broke for half term :-(  if we get no joy we will certainly post one when it re-opens. Thanks for the suggestions (flat is a teeny tiny 1 bed no room for Au pair)

Just to add this as im in SHOCK. I joined a site childcarelondon.com who 5 minutes ago phoned me to discuss my requirement and after a 10 minute call told me of the fees.

childcarelondon.com: "There is a £25 registration fee to pay and then 5x the weekly wage you will pay one of our minders"

me:"so if I pay £200 per week I would pay you £1,000??"

childcarelondon.com:"hang on let me check"

(background discussions)

"yes thats right"

me:"wow, who has £1,200 a week for childcare? and part time at that? goodbye"

childcarelondon.com avoid avoid avoid

I would assume the £1000 is a one-off payment - a finder's fee ?
No it was a weekly fee for each week you used their services.
Unbelievable !!!
