Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Here is a bit of fun for anyone with an interest in London and a fascination for data visualisation (hopefully that's not just me!)

James Cheshire, a PhD student at the Department of Geography, at UCL has designed a map that locates the most frequently recorded surnames in their geographical location across the city. The map can be seen by following this link a couple of controls allow you to move around the map and explore more deeply the number of popular names in a particular area. James explains the background in an accompanying blog post.

The names are identified by their place of origin (NB that is the origin of the name - not the person) Looking at our area it is perhaps no suprise that several Greek / Cypriot origin names emerge along the line of Green Lanes - more unexpected perhaps are the incidence of Welsh names in the borough of Haringey.

Fascinating stuff!

Thanks Richard. Great stuff.
Interesting link! I had to admit I found it hard to navigate though - is there a version with the place names overlaid on the map? My geography's not good enough to recognise Harringay without any landmarks I have to admit...
