Architect for bathroom?
We want to have a new bathroom put in, integrating the separate bathroom and toilet. As it is at the top of the stairs, there might be a chance to regain some space or slightly better lay out things with the back bedroom. As all walls need replastering or repartitioning entirely anyway, changing things slightly may be no more work than sorting out what's there now.
But does anyone know a good - and reasonable - architect or design-minded builder who could plan this out effectively and quickly for us? We want someone who can make the best of what we have and offer some new ideas.

Hey Rnm, are you sure you want to go down the route of hiring an architect as it can prove pretty expensive? As long a no walls are load bearing then you're pretty much able to go with whatever it is you want. Space management is all pretty much straight forward. I tend to work exclusively in Bathroom and Bathroom fit outs and would be happy to pop along and at least give you some advise before you decide which route you wish to take. With out even seeing the job I would advise you get a good idea of the size of Bath, toilet, sink etc and if you wish for plumbing, cisterns etc to be hidden (most are these days, but really depends on budget) and if you're wanting a wetroom etc. If you're able to the builder what you want then the rest is pretty much straight forward. To be honest all an Architect will do is draw you a rough picture of where they best think things should go. They do not (and this is the problem) take into consideration where plumbers can run waste to, or gain feeds from. This all has to be worked out on site and thats why I always question the architect route.

Hi - we had exactly what you're proposing done to our new house.. Knocked Walls down and re-jigged the bathroom and back bedroom to make better use of space. Totally don't need an architect, just a good builder. Would thoroughly recommend our builders who did a great job with it all for not a lot of money. You're very welcome to come round and have a look and chat.. I've got photos of the renovation too so you can see how it progressed.

I wondered if my husband and I could pop round sometime for 10 mins to check out your bathroom (that sounds very strange) and see your photos of the work. Just read the thread. Quite clear that a few of the comments painted a fairly poor picture of the service offered by architects.
Appointing an architect need not be expensive and in response to Martins comment the first task which would be carried out upon viewing a bathroom would be to fully appraise drainage / location of soil vent pipes etc. I do agree that you do not always require an architect it would depend on the extend of the works and your wider aspirations for the space. An architect would be able to take a more holistic view of the works and fully co-ordinate other elements i.e. lighting / extract and the potential to add additional insulation if located on an external elevation.
We would also be in a position to advise on potential statutory requirements (planning permission) and regulatory aspects of the build (building control). These items are sometimes overlooked when employing only a builder to undertake the works, although if they are competent this is generally carried out.
