Neighbourhood watch falls victim to cuts
A lynchpin at the centre of the Neighbourhood Watch scheme in Haringey is set to be cut.
The link manager role in the borough-wide scheme is to be cut next year after a Haringey Police spokeswoman said they could no longer afford to keep the post. Pauline Syddell who has been in the role for several years will lose her job in March.
Superintendent Chris Barclay, of Haringey Police, said it was "time to move forward".
"Funding for this post has been removed, meaning the post comes to an end at the end of the current financial year," he said.
"Pauline has done a great job, however due to the financial situation it's time to move forward and this is the way forward. Each Neighbourhood Watch will have a named person from their local Safer Neighbourhood Team responsible for the watch and each watch will have its own meetings to discuss ways to resolve local issues. The watches will deal with officers who have good local knowledge.
"We will continue to provide a good service. It will look 'Slightly different, but it will still be a good service."

That is very sad news. Pauline is a local lass and has worked hard over the years to build up the NWs in this area.

Supt Barclay's niggardly half-dozen words, "Pauline has done a great job", followed by "time to move forward" reminds me of an old Irish headmaster of mine whose farewell speech for some departing staff didn't go beyond "Well, the graveyard's full of indispensables."
Pauline has been indispensable as Link Manager, starting NWs across the Borough especially in evangelising for NW in the Eastern reaches and attempting to kick the more dormant among us into life. Her trojan work often went beyond the call of duty, occasionally supporting the insupportable at boroughwide level. To fall back on another Irish proverb:'You'll never miss the water till the well runs dry'. I hope our local Harringay police will be a little more appreciative than the Super managed to sound.

I started my Neighbourhood Watch thanks to Pauline and with her help have continued with it, despite blanket indifference and even low level hostility, to build up a solid core of people who care. Honestly, without her unswerving support and enthusiasm, I can't see myself bothering after March.
