A question about cakes
I'm thinking about making American-style cakes for people but have no idea what to charge. Would you buy these cakes? If so, what do you think they're worth? All ingredients are high quality and when an organic option is available, I use that.

Gosh they are beautiful. I love looking at beautiful cakes but I prefer to eat something built for taste and that's easy to eat (especially if it's at an outdoor food market or something) which usually means brownie or a simple cupcake or fruit tart etc. I'd pay up to £2.50 for a cupcake and about £15 for a whole cake.

Thank you Sophie for reminding me to mention the taste. That's the most important thing and why I call tham American-style. All ingredients are organic when possible and I hate to brag - but they are moist and delicious! That allotment cake is an American carrot cake (lighter than the English version). I also make Red velvet, ginger, sponge, American Pound cake (a butter cake) and all the traditional favourites.

Ha Ha Osbawn I see your point -- though those of us from the coasts would beg to differ with your stereotype : ) The whole point is that they are American-style cakes -- such as Hummingbird bakery in South Kensington.

£2.50 per cup cake, £15 for a whole cake seems about right to me. Would I buy one? Course I would! (My name is Antoinette after all!)
If you really want to make some serious cash though, I think your allotment cake and other bespoke designs like it would be the thing to concentrate on. I took the pics too BTW. It'll give you an idea of what someone who is already doing it provides. The cup cake market seems to be quite full at the moment, so one needs something unique.

I'm gobsmacked. £2.50 for a cup cake! How much do you all get paid? Clearly you've got money to burn. I'd expect to pay about 50p on a stall. And the Stoke Newington farmers market has whole family sized cakes for about £3.50, which are delicious and vegan.

I tend to agree - £2.50 does seem a lot for a single cake, particularly since the supermarkets are now producing them for a lot less.
Thats why one needs to study the market, because everyone is jumping on the market and the only successful ones offer something special at the right price.

Hello everyone. Thank you for the feedback. I've been selling my cupcakes at community festivals, etc.. for £1 each -- in Wood Green no less. I agree that they have to be special -- as mine are. I always sell out.
