Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Licensing Committee has granted permission for a premises licence for Betfred (next to the Post Office). One slender hope remains in the form of a possible refusal from the Planning Inspectorate for planning permission, whose decision is still awaited, but with the licence now granted, the scales are tipped further against us.

What all this means, which of course we already knew, is that it is impossible to prevent an unlimited number of betting shops opening in our community.

James, so YOU're saying poor people are scum. That's your choice of words, just don't make out those words were mine.
Yes, beggars are scum in my book. Anyone who asks for my hard earned money for not good reason other than wanting a piece for themselves is not great in my book. Again, not poor people in general, but beggars. Especially that horrible aggressive one that should have been locked up a long time ago. Oh, and I am "so sorry" if I am now offending the nicey-nicey pc brigade.
This is going off topic. And for that I apologise. Not for anything else. And James, one last thing: Do not compare anyone to Hitler. If anything is offensive, that is. I am surprised you can't see that, as you're so concerned with being PC.
Example of Godwin's law at play http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law ?
Yan, I have been thinking exacty the same. Have been here for 7 years, and the area is rapidly going down hill. We're now looking around for a new place in a different area, as we've had enough. And by the sound of it we're not the only ones. This could potentially be a great place, but it needs a massive clean-up, starting with the beting shops, continue with the beggars and general scum that's started congregating on Grand Parade, and go from there.. It's insane that the current Gambling Act has managed to destroy what could have been a great place to live.
James, it's a free country (kind of).
What exactly about my post do you find offensive? I certainly dont condone heroin cartels or money-laundering but this is the reality of Green Lanes. Perversely the rule of this gang used to make the area safer and cleaner.
I'm just stating facts. Take the latest shooting incident for example, or the increase in muggings etc
In my opinion these incidents are related to the power vacuum created by Bubasin's imprisonment and the gung-ho attitude of younger more chaotic gang elements that are feeling more confident to commit crime in the area. Of course, recession and spending cuts are having their effects as well, and the capitulation to betting shops is just making things worse.

But long live Cafe Lemon and The Salisbury!
Yan, your post is not offensive in any way.
Sorry James but I'm with Anette here. Nothing offensive to my mind.
I've been here for 10 years and have only seen this place improve. I am moving, but that is only for a change of scene. Yes it has its problems, but generally I think its cleaner and has fewer 'beggars' etc than it used to do, and flytipping has got better (I know, as used to have a big issue near our house, but worked with the council to sort it out. Result - the main flytipper has been fined).

Meanwhile all you need to do is look at the shops on the street generally to see how things get better - yes betting is an issue, but Harringay is a great place, with a great community feel, some really good schools and Yaser Halim. Nuff said.
Agreed, Lindalove (although I'm not moving).
Under the rule of Bubasin the place started to look quite respectable for a while

I'm assuming this is in reference to the Baybasin brothers - also known as the Escobars of Europe. The same criminal organisation responsible for the shootings that took place in/around Dostlar social club circa 2002/3. The same organisation responsible for terrorising local businesses with protection rackets, vandalism and so on. The same organisation responsible for encouraging and proactively pushing Kurdish youths (including myself) to partake in criminal behaviour.

Yan you are of course entitled to your own opinion, no matter if I agree with it or not. I just believe you're not aware of the chaos the Baybasins, as well as Tottenham Boys/Bombacilar (in the same criminal family), caused and continue to cause in our community. You only have to look at the murders that took place in Hackney and Tottenham last year. These organisations are the reason we had police armed with semi-automatic machine guns patrolling Green Lanes, only recently.

Again - I don't find your opinion as 'wrong' or offensive, I just believe you are misinformed and unaware of the subjects you referred to.

My beef is with the Council - not sure if anyone in the Council is keeping an eye on our stretch of Green Lanes. The number of betting shops are ridiculous. On the other hand - I think the area is improving - in terms of numerous food outlets getting a revamp very recently and new places opening up (Obergine, Cig Kofte - both new - Diyarbakir, Oz Kervan Sarayi (formerly Mizgin), Gokyuzu Restaurant (soon to be the largest Restaurant in the area), Flame Restaurant (formerly Bingol). One friend who works at one of these outlets recently referred to the improvements as 'great', he said he was happy the standard was improving and he saw this stretch of Green Lanes as the new Upper Street. I hope he is right.

I have lived in Haringey the borough for 15 years - Green Lanes, in my opinion, is a gem.

That's why I live here.
I should have clarified my opinion in case anyone would consider it likely that I support a murderous, torturing heroin gang on my doorstep. I don't. I was only stating facts.

I am aware of the chaos and misery caused by these people. From what I have read they are still in control but things have become a little bit destabilized in the last few years. And I'm not impressed if, as one report suggested, the problem is tolerated in an attempt to catch corrupt Turkish politicians.

The new Upper Street? It would be great to have something other than a kebab shop of course..
Upper Street is a sh*thole. Harringay is awesome.
James, I think it's okay for people who live here to air their views honestly. It's one thing to have a long-time resident call their home a shit-hole, another to have someone from outside do so. However, it's up to the rest of us to provide some balance.

I see no objective basis for agreeing with the people who are seeing Harringay through mud-coloured specs. I think it would be enormously hard on any objective measure to say that Harringay has gone downhill over the past decade.

The streets are certainly tidier. I've seen pictures on this site somewhere showing, for example, the awful mess that used to exist at the end of Seymour - what's there now pales into insignificance in comparison. And, in general, the streets are much cleaner.

As for crime? Look at the stats - down in all categories.

Shops? Perhaps a bit more of a shopping monoculture, but definitely smarter.

Pubs? We have a marvellously restored Salisbury & The Garden Ladder.

Traffic? Some say it's got better with the one way; others say it's got worse.

So, on the key indicators things have tended to get better rather than worse. This wouldn't be hard to prove. However, it's clear that for at least a couple of people the feelgood factor has gone. To better understand it, I'd welcome hearing specifically what those people think has deteriorated.

My current understanding is that you feel there is:

1. an increase in crime (Yan). I think Yan's wrong, but we can consult the crime data to resolve that question.
2. a "rule of gangsters" (Yan) - I'm unclear what the complaint is here. At one point Yan is yearning for the rule of Husseyin Bubassin and the next bemoaning the rule of gangsters. So two issues: a) Yan, what is your standpoint here? b) We should get an official view about the presence of "gangsterism" on Green Lanes. What's the police view? (And I'm not saying that should be accepted without question).
3. more "beggars & scum" on Green Lanes (Anette). Are there? Not sure I agree nor what objective data is available on this, but I would welcome people's views.
4. more betting shops - can't argue with that.
