Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Licensing Committee has granted permission for a premises licence for Betfred (next to the Post Office). One slender hope remains in the form of a possible refusal from the Planning Inspectorate for planning permission, whose decision is still awaited, but with the licence now granted, the scales are tipped further against us.

What all this means, which of course we already knew, is that it is impossible to prevent an unlimited number of betting shops opening in our community.

significant contributor to the UK economy

This is a bookkeepers' or PR spinner's view and it depends what is meant by 'contributor'. An economist might have a different take. Most producers of goods and services add value and contribute to an expansion of the economy directly or indirectly. The gambling industry by contrast could be thought to be, at best, a zero-sum game, contributing little or nothing to economic growth.

The bets staked amount to transfer payments, but without any socially ameliorative value. The overheads deducted are someone else's income, but they might well be employed in doing something more useful elsewhere in the economy that actually expanded the economy.

The social cost of saturation betting shops in poor areas is not factored into this equation as it is less quantifiable, but likely to show up in the budgets of spending departments such as police, hospitals and social welfare. Then there are the wholly unquantifyable effects on family life, likely to be negative.
Dear all, is there anything we can do? Is there a national initiative against betting shops we can join? Or maybe design some creative guerrilla propaganda campaign against them?
Green Lanes continues its slide into full-on ghetto status.

It seems most of the hipsters have moved out, (probably to Stokey) and the crime, fly tipping, begging, kids flying around pavements on bikes and general dodgy-looking people hanging around all seem to be on the increase.

I moved here around 10 years ago, and the last few Irish and Greek places were just closing down then. Under the rule of Bubasin the place started to look quite respectable for a while, but most definitely this area is fast turning into a proper shithole.

I find it amazing that there is no power available to politicians, police or councils (or residents for that matter!) to stop this rule of gangsters and the instant deprivation and undesirables that a slew of betting shops WITHOUT A DOUBT encourages.

Fast losing hope for what used to be an area with a lot of character and charm..
If anyone needed a working definition of saturation betting shops, they need look no further than the area clustered on the Green Lanes Post Office situated on a corner.

There's a Bet Fred alongside (in the former Nationwide Building Society), there's a Ladbrokes opposite and a Metrobet opposite on the other side. Two doors north of Betfred is a William Hill betting shop and some way further north, a Coral. There are several betting shops to the south of the post office, also in Green Lanes.

It is unsurprising that this "licensed" activity might be affecting the character of the area. The issue of premises licences is now little short of a formality, though there a small amount of resistance may be possible under Planning bye-laws.

As to "power available", its quite simple. There's plenty of power available to politicians, because it was legislators in the New Labour government who promoted the present situation, via their Gambling Act (2005). Amongst other things, this took power away from councils (and courts and communities). The present situation is no accident and is what the gambling industry lobbied the last government for.

For the part of New Labour, it was to demonstrate how market-friendly they were (ditto, 24-hour drinking). Many years ago, I imagined that Labour had a social conscience.
yan white* i find your post offensive (if i'd said half what you said ..... etc etc)
Yan* if you don't think calling harringay a 'shithole' offensive there's nothing i can say to you. If you think having a criminal murderering heroin dealer in charge of policing is a good thing i question your politics. Anette, describing poor folk as 'scum' isn't not helpful.
James, Yan speaks the truth as he sees it. If you find that offensive then that's your problem. Everything is not nicey-nicey all the time. And where in my post did I say scum equals poor people???? I suggest you stop looking for hidden insults. Makes for better understanding of what people are actually saying.
anette* ''...with the beggars and general scum that's started congregating on Grand Parade...'' I'm sorry if i misread you but i think beggars are usually poor folk. I was led to believe that this site does not tolerate abuse. In my opinion 'SHIT HOLE' is abusive and it offends me. How do you work out that these are 'hidden' insults ?
I know it's cheezy but calling beggars 'scum' and then shouting down dissent by arguing that folk should ''Speak the truth as they see it'' reminds me of hitler.
Yan saying that we were better off with a criminal strongarm in charge of our community policing reminds me of mussolini (he's a bad man but he get's the trains to run on time).
there are lots of poor people that dont beg. Most beggars have abuse problems (yes, they were abused and it messed them up) but also drug and drink abuse. These are different issues to being poor. and its a fact that giving them money, encouraging them, only feeds their addictions and keeps them on the street.
I took issue with a posting on another website which described Tottenham Hale as a "shit hole". To his (or her?) credit, the person who wrote this then acknowledged that sweeping condemnation was unfair. And engaged constructively with my comments.
No. You are mistaken.
That is not what I was saying at all.
I was stating a simple fact.
I apologise for the confusion this seems to have caused with several people.

I don't want hitler or mussolini or any other gangster in charge.
THE GOVERNMENT WE ELECTED should be dealing with the problem.
Well, actually, he's not mistaken. He said you called it a 'shit hole' and you did. Now maybe that's your view. Fine, you're entitled to it, but Alan's not mistaken to point it out and to imply that he's not comfortable with it.
