Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey Council has been dubbed England’s “most rotten borough,” as new data reveals it has the highest number of upheld complaints per capita for the second year in a row. Something I hope voters will keep in mind when they vote next year.Haringey Council worst for complains for 2nd year

It's embarrassing to say the least for those of us who have lived in this Borough all of our lives. People can keep it in mind Simon but when it comes to the Ballot Box nothing changes - I wonder why?

Well… it is a bit flakey isn’t it? Having the highest number of complaints could just mean more people complain than in other boroughs. Having the highest number of upheld complaints could mean complaints are taken more seriously than in other places. It’s not really a measure of actual services is it? What about repeat complaints by the same person?

I tend to agree, I had the same situation with a large company I worked for. Only written complaints were included in the stats, as a consequence this didn't really reflect actual service shortfalls in any region,  but more on the literary enthusiasm of certain elements within them.

As boroughs go, Haringey isn't that bad in comparison to some others.

I have twice attempted to post on this topic. Each time unsuccessfully. Can someone advise why I have not been able to do so? With thanks. Brian Bowles

BRIAN, this topic has had more and earlier attention on HoL here.

The title of this thread ("worst council for complaints ") is inaccurate and misleading.

According to the Private Eye article reproduced in the linked post, Birmingham was the most complained about, with more than 600 Complaints.

However if one is being honest and objective—as the Local Government Ombudsman is—then this needs to be adjusted for population.

Capita per 100,000 residents is the standard measure. It is by this independent measure—used by the LGO—that Haringey ranks as No.1.

Adjusted for number of residents, Birmingham does significantly better than Haringey, at only 8.1 Upheld Complaints per 100k, versus Haringey Council's chart-topping 20.2.

The title is correct in that Haringey Council leads for the second year in a row. The current leadership of the Borough of Culture 2027 has been in place for the last three years.

Clive: So pleased you keep highlighting Haringey’s role as Borough of Culture 2027. Even if there are many things to complain about in the way the council behaves overall, it’s just possible that some events, exhibitions, performances or other artistic endeavours might in fact appeal to some of the borough’s residents, and even encourage them — or visitors — to think, to be entertained or to enjoy aspects of life here, even if you (presumably) won’t. Have you any details of the proposed events that you can share with us yet?

Don: Thanks for bringing more attention to the Borough of Culture 2027. I'm sure the council's culture plans will, as you say, appeal to some of the borough's residents.

Excepting public library opening hours of course, the Council Leadership could hardly be more committed to culture.

  • Their Director of Culture is paid c. £165,000 p.a. (plus commensurate pension) and
  • The council is currently seeking a Fixed Term role, beginning this Autumn, for a Chief Executive Officer & Executive Director Haringey Culture Collective for London Borough of Culture 2027.

It's early days, but you could write to the growing Culture team about proposed events. And if you're interested in the new "Up to £80,000" pro rata, fixed term role, then the job description is at this linked pdf.

Despite the Government-underwritten resources available to Haringey Council there is a risk that their busy public relations team may not bring a focus big enough, in order to match the Leadership's ambition for Borough of Culture 2027.

.

Clive: Thanks for this. After around 40 years in arts administration, marketing and event management, I’ve thankfully taken my finger off the keyboard for good, so I shan’t be applying (even for a fixed term), but I can certainly think of a few people who probably should. I’ll look forward to the programme announcement in due course and hope that you’ll also be supporting the events as the kind of public good a local authority should be encouraging for the benefit of all its residents.
