Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The X account of the Friends of Finsbury Park, who have long and loudly campaigned against the repeated renting-out of our park to private businesses such as Wireless and Krankbrother, has been suspended.

Anyone on here know or have any idea why? I assume they have appealed, because I cannot for one moment imagine that a respectable body like this would post anything abusive, unpleasant or inappropriate.  And I certainly hope that they have, because their decent and responsible voice is needed now more than ever, as the sounds of rap, thrash metal and repetitive beats invade our homes once again...

That does seem odd. Their email address is thefriendsoffinsburypark@gmail.com

Hugh, as you probably know I'm one of the Trustees of the FoFP.

I've never had access to our X/Twitter account and I do not know why it has been suspended.

However, we are trying to find out.

Thanks, both.

Occam's razor Clive.

Hi Paul, thanks for publicising this.

At the time of writing, the Friend's X/Twitter account remains suspended and for reason unknown.

It does seem something of a coincidence that, out of all four seasons of the year, this should happen during Haringey Council's hire of Licensed Premises to their corporate customers (i.e. half of the public's Finsbury Park).

I cannot recall any previous suspension and not in 10 years of the council's Major Events policy.

(Following Haringey's hire of our park to their Tough Mudder customer (and the generation of much mud), one of our tweets garnered more than 900,000 views. Plus criticism by MPs David Lammy and Jeremy Corbyn, plus national adverse publicity, none of which would have been welcomed at council HQ.)

Having made some enquiries, I can say that I am unaware of any recent tweet that would have provoked a suspension by infringing Twitter's rules.

I do hope that the suspension was not generated as the result of a malicious complaint by someone associated with the Council's Events Season.

Occam's razor, Clive.

Which do you think is the simplest, Brian? A social media account run by a committee of 'older' citizens runs foul of one of the many technical justifications for suspension (multiple accounts, logins from differing locations, following/unfollowing etc); or 'big mud' and 'big dad rock' conspired with Elon to bring the Friends down?

'Older' citizens eh James. Bound to be incompetent aren't they. Shouldn't be let anywhere near an electronic device. Not like those young innocent kind patriotic people who chant about love and goodwill to all at music festivals lately.

Yes. Not bound but more likely. Odd conclusion. Weird tangent.

Want to answer my question?

I suspect your razor's a little rusty, Brian. The Friends are so completely ineffectual they can only really be seen as an ally of both the Council and the promoters. Why would they want rid of them?

James, if I have wrongly conflated "JamesN" with "James Noble", then I apologise. I do not conceal my identity but by your disguising yours, you leave yourself open to such a link being made.

Your comments about The Friends of Finsbury Park are consistent with previous comments made by "James Noble".

It would be helpful if HoL members would disclose their surnames to avoid mix-ups.

I appreciate that you have (rightly) criticised the absence of a public drinking water fountain in our park, but this is well short of arguing against Haringey Council's major events policy.

You claim that you oppose Major Events; can you please direct me to examples of opposition to the council's policy which you have posted?

.

This is unbelievable. No one owes you anything Clive and your attitude is completely disrespectful. You throw around unfounded accusations and then ask the person you accuse to prove you are wrong. You should be ashamed of yourself

Stupifying arrogance. Rather than an apology and retraction, I get a feeble fauxpology laced with victim blaming. We then see the failed Lib Dem councillor descend into a fascistic trope about identity disclosure. How very liberal.

That you apparently have a folder of years old tweets that challenge your views (neither account you post currently exists, so that screenshot is one you've had saved for some time) speaks so clearly to your time in petty local politics. I'd recommend you reassess your methods, but suspect that change might be a little much to expect in your dottage.

As a trustee of this venerable charity, perhaps take some personal responsibility for the failings of its online security and social media presence. In the absence of having the charity actually achieve anything, this would at least be a start.
